GEORGE ARLISS IN SUPERB COMEDY AT IMPERIAL MON.-TUES. Special Musical In Color, “La Cucaracha” Worthy Of Feature Billing BRING BACK BING CROSBY “She Loves Me Not” Will Be Shown For Second Time In City Wednesday By HOWARD HANCOCK From a man seeking to make nail’ions, to one seeking to give them away is the latest screen transition made by George Arliss, noted artist, whose latest produc tion, “The Last Gentleman,” will be shown next Monday-Tuesday at the Imperial. Mr. Arliss p'.ayed the founder of the great banking family in “The House of Roth child,” and in “The Last Gen - tleman” widely hailed as its not ed successor, he takes the role of a rich o d man trying to pick an heir. The latest picture is furth er at variance from the proceeding film in that it takes the star from the field of drama into that ot comedy. Mr. Arliss appears as a croch ety old fellow, pretending to hate his living kinsmen while adoring his ancestors. And, he does not live in th)e South, but in the an cestral home in Massachusetts. He has his house filled with clocks and stuffed peacocks on the lawn. He decides to hold a memorial service at his home to mark the passing of a niece, drowned in China. In reality, he is using this means to get his relatives togeth er to see what they look like. To the service comes his son, Donald Meek, a worthless rotter, his wife and some other relatives, including a granddaughter, Char - lotte Henry. The old man insults thep all, but young Charlotte Henry takes a shine to the iras cible cuss, seeing beneath his chil ly exterior a heart yearning for love. Mr. Arliss has a very clubby time playing pranks on his guests, saving his best one until after he has passed on to his re ward, when he sends them a jaunty message. “The Last Gentleman” is an excellent comedy, made so by its distinguished star, George Arliss, and a notable cast, composed principally, in addition to those mentioned, of Edna Mae Oliver, Janet B: echer, Ralph Morgan, and Joseph Cawthorn. It wou’d indeed be unfair to give a sketch of Next Monday - Tuesday’s Imperial program with out a word about “La Cucaracha,” special musical in color. Telling a eolorful and romantic Story of life in the cantinas of Old Mexi co, “La Cucaracha” is the first of the new films to appear on the screen. The volatile young Hun garian actress Steffi Duna, will seen in the leading role, and Don Alvarado and Paul Poracsi are featured in this exotic mel ody drama ^ featuring the dance and song from which the picture derives its name, and which is pronounced: “La - Coo-Cab Kah Cha.” ************ “She Loves Me Not”, starring Bing Crosby and Miriam Hopkins, which played a first-run engag - ment in the city a few weeks ago will be brought back for a spec'ai cne-day showing at the lmperia next Wednesday, “bargain day ” The “win at any cost” spirit in modern football is in a way exemplified in thje new comedy - drama, “Gridiron Flash,” whi.h comes to the Imperial next Thurs ilay-Frlday. Bound up with the fortunes of a college gridiron, the te,am depends upon a young bank robber for its main source of power. The picture is said to spark with the eo'or of college life plus the bewildering circum stance of discovering its hero to be a paroled convict. Eddie, Quillan has the role of tkp “Cherub,” a little man with a soft face and the spirit of a Dil-inger. While serving a prison term he P^ys quarter-back on the, institution’s team and at - tracts the attention of a wealthy alumnus of Be ford College. The upshot of this is that the Cherub lands smack into the mid dle of the Belford campus—sign Regular Jail Visitors FLEMINUTON, N. J. . . . Mrs. Bruno K. Hauptmann and her young son (above) still remain this town’s most interesting characters as they make their weekly trip to the county jail to visit the father who is held for trial in the Lindbergh ease which starts early in January. I - ed, sealed and delivered to play football for the school. He is obligated because the alumnus se cured the pardon and has been ap pointed his unofficial guardian. It is hoped thg boy will be re-creat ed by the college spirit, but he is a tough little nut to crack. The football skirmishes are enacted by members of the team of a California college. Betty Furness is featured with Quillan and the supporting cast includes Giant Mitchell, Lucian Littlefield and Edgar Kennedy. “Gridiron Flash” is a time'y comedy you will enjoy. “SOON” JOAN CRAWFORD in “CHAINED” FREDRIC MARCH norma SHEARER - “THE BARRETTS of WIMPOLE STREET” and MAURICE CHEVALIER with JEANETTE MacDONALD in “ THE MERRY WIDOW ” Will Be Shown at Roanoke Rapids Theatres Watch for Dates !
