ASK THAT
BOARDS BE
ABOLISHED
Resolutions regarding the State
school institution were passed at
thelast meeting of the Kiwanis
Club, asking the Legislature, for
more appropriations for public
schools, the abolition of one of the
State Boards and for the appoint
ment of th estate Supt. of Public
Instruction as executive secretary
of the State Board of Eduation or
combined commission.
The abolition of the extra State
School Board now functioning
wuold mean the elimination of
George C. Green, of Weldon, a
member of the new board ap
pointed by Governor Ehringhaus.
It would also mean that LeRoy
Martin, present secretary of the
Commissionn, wuold lose that job.
During sessions of the legislature,
Mr. Martin doubles as Clerk of the
Senate.
The resolutions are as follows:
‘ The Kiwanis Club of Roanoke
Rapids, N. C., representing the
business and professional men of
our town, hereby petition our
Representatives in the State Legis
lature ;
1. “To follow the State Super
intendnet of Public Instruction in
the matter of appropriations for
schools for the next biennium.
2. “To unify and coordinate the
State’s activities for schools by
appointnig the State Board of Edu
cation, which is a constitutional
body, to serve as the State School
Commission, and to render such
needed services as should be ren
dered by a State School Commis
sion.
3. “To appoint the State Super
intendent of Public Instruction to
serve as an executive Secretary to
the State School Commission, thus
assuring complete cooperation be
tween the State school forces.”

159 Year Old Towel
Found In Pugh Estate
In the estate of the, late Mrs.
Kate Pugh, who died a few days
ago at her home in Halifax County,
and who was 97 years old, were
found many articles of historical
interest. Among them was a towel
which was given Mrs. Pugh’s
grandmother 159 years ago as a
souvenir of the signing of the
Declaration of Independence.
The towel is made of white linen
with a three-inch border of red,
and is fringed at both ends. In
each of the four corners is an
American shield, woven in the, cen
ter and surrounded by small stars
is the following inscription: “The
Independence of the United States
of America declared July 4, 1776."
Dividnig this from the next part
is an American eagle, below which
reads: “Washington elected Presi
dent of the Federal Union, March,
1789. E. Pfaribug Unum.”
The towel is in an almost per
fect state of preservation. It is
not known just how long the towel
has been inn Mrs. Pugh’s posses
sion. It eventually will go to the
great-great-great-grandson of the
original owner, Mastre James Ed
ward Condrey, III.
Mr. T. B. Coaker, of Portsmouth,
Va., attended the funeral of Mrs.
J. C. Squire Sunday.
