Quiet, soft-spoken, well-educated, the new Chief has made a splendid impression on all who have met him. He has frankly discussed the problems of his office with civic clubs, the Fire Department, the High School Traffic Squad, and* has asked for the cooperation of all law'-abiding citizens. We believe it is his for the asking. OUR Bob, junior United States Senator Robert Rice Reynolds, in a new pose and new picture. Last week, Bob spoke in Pitts burgh on Army Day, termed pre paredness best peace insurance, indirectly flayed the Huey Longs and Coughlins when he said this country wanted no dictators, would have no+hh;.™ to do with Fascism or Communism. Bob has lost some conservative support in North Carolina because of liberal leanings and votes. Up for re election in 1938, most-mentioned opponents are Tom Bowie and Cam Morrison. Sales-Tax Tells Senate on Floor That He Is Against All Forms Of Sales Tax “I am against a 3 per cent a 2 per cent or a one per cent I am against ali forms of sales tax,” said Send;** \:>lian R Allsbrook in a speech on th t floor of the Senate late tlm afternoon. Last speaker of the day, the Halifax County Senator told the Senate it was wrong to tax the necessities of life. He told them of other sources of revenue, which according to radio commentator Carl Goerch, sounded very inter esting. He said the people were told the sales tax was an emei ~ " ■ > gency measure and now, instead of lowering or doing away will it, the legislature was actually try ing to raise it, by knocking out the exemptions on staple food stuff. A vote on the sales tax section of the revenue bill is set for 11 a. m. Friday. Senator Hill offered his liquor control act as a means of raising any deficit caused by lowering the sales tax. He said he had rath er tax liquor than to tax the bread and meat of the poor. The Senate passed a joint re solution, sponsored in the Senate by Senator Allsbrook, inviting Frank Belegrano, National Com mander of the American Legion, to address a joint session of the legislature Friday, the 19th. IASKIBIDS NEW CITY BUILDING Bids for the erection of a 1 municipal building for Roa noke Rapids are asked for in a notice appearing in this issue to be opened here on April 24th. The building will house the Fire Department, Sanitary District offices, Police De partment, city court room, and other city offices. If a successful bidder is ob tained on the 24th. work on the building should begin some timey in May. For fur ther details of notice to bid ders, see inside. LOW BID ON LOCAL P. O. BLDG. Low bid on the construc tion of the new Post Office Building for Roanoke Rapids was submitted by James I. Barnes of Logansport, Ind iana, on March 28th. accord to an Associated Press report from Washington, D. C. Bids were opened by U. S. Treasury Department. There were none from local contrac tors. The Barnes’ bid was 33. 890. for construction with face brick and cast stone trim, 836,258. with granite trim and 835,500 with marble trim. Police Get Their Mao -o Entered Office of Dr. Harbour and Took $100 Gold Rims -0 Quick detective work by citv police solved the robbery of the office of Dr. E. D Harbour, optician, when E D. Carlton, textile worker was arrested Saturday after noon. A search of Carlton’s room produced practically all the loot taken from the office just before midnight Friday. About $100 worth of gold rims for spectacles was stolen and all this was recovered. Carlton was wearing a watch which was part of the loot. The rims and finish, ed spectacles were found in a paper bag under the bed in Carl -o (Continued on Page Four) OLD MILL REOPENS SHORTLY West Va. Men Buy After Months of Ef fort By Chase The fibre board mill, clos ed for the past three years, will he re-opened and opera tions resumed in a short fime, according to J. T. Chase, Vice President of the Virginia Electric & Power Co., who for the past several months has been negotiating with a group of mill men in West Virginia. Exact details of the busi ness deal, as well as opening date, were not available to nieht but it is thought a crew will be at work very soon making repairs and installa tions of new eouinment. The only official informa tion tonight is that the deal has been definitely closed and the m?ll will run again. From 50 to 75 men are em ployed when the plant h in operation. Running for years as the Roanoke Fibre Board Co., the mill was bought in 1931 by Hopewell men who changed the name to South ern Paper Board Mills Inc. They operated it for about a year. Situated on the banks of the Roanoke River at the city bridge and across the highway from the Power Company plants, the mill has been a lonely sight for the past three years Citizens of Roanoke Rapids will welcome the new operators and wish them every success in their undertaking. ■— -O MARTIN IN RACE -O R. Martin, bandmaster and justice of the peace, has filed for the office of Mayor of Roanoke Rapids and makes the following statement: “I hereby announce my can didacy for Mayor of the City of Roanoke Rapids, subject to the voters of North and South wards. If elected, I promise to discharge the duties of said office to the very best of my ability.”
