SHOPS TO CLOSE ON JULY 4TH -0 City Stores Decide To Stay Open All Day Wednesday and Close Fourth ■-V Despite the fact members of the Roanoke Rapids Merchants Asso ciation decided to keep their stores open all day on July 4th at their last meeting, they have re-con sidered and have now decided to close on that day, according to word coming from Miss Lillian Belle Jenkins, secretary. Because the Fourth comes on Thursday this year, the stores will stay open all day Wednesday, in stead of closing on Wednesday af ternoon, as has been the custom since June 1st. This action will not interfere with future Wednes day afternoon closing hours, and after next Wednesday, the stores will close at noon until Septem ber, according to the approved schedule for summer hours. All members of the association have approved closing Thursday, Miss Jenkins said, and it is thought other merchants who do not be long to the association will co operate, so remember to do your shopping Wednesday, as the stores will be closed all day Thursday, July 4th. ■-o— 2 Cases Paralysis (Continued from Page 1) the hospital two months ago, is so much improved that his father re ports no sign of limping and all temporary paralysis evidently cur ed. In discussing infantle paralysis on the Avenue, it was found that two well known citizens were vic tims in their early years: W. C. Williams and Alton Gurganus. On advice of City Health Of ficer Dr. John Martin, it is report ed the Mayor and City Board of Commissioners will take action to prohibit small children from at tending any public gathering un til cool weather. The baby clinic which has been held each Thursday at the doc tors’ offices of Rosemary Mfg. Co. will be discontinued until furth er notice, as a precautionary meas ure against spread of infantile paralysis. Mayor Kelly Jenkins stated this afternoon he was getting in touch with the Commissioners today to get approval of an ordinance that would keep children under 14 years of age from any public gathering in Roanoke Rapids until further notice. Physicians say there is no cause for undue alarm as long as par ents are careful about keeping children from places where the contagion might spread. T. E. Baird Dies At His Home Saturday -o T. E.
