Marlowe, 32, member of the Roanoke Rapids Fire Depart ment and city employee, died Mon day morning at Duke Hospital aft er a serious illness. A short time ago, every member of the Department volunteered to give blood for transfusions and thirteen were administered in an effort to save him. Funeral services were held yes terday afternoon at the home, 319 Monroe Street with interment in Roanoke Rapids Cemetery. Mem bers of the Department acted as pallbearers. A native of Halifax County, Mr. (Continued on Page 4) Crippled Clinic Here May 20th The Kiwanis Club Crippled Clin ic will be held Wednesday, May 20th, in the basement of the Rose mary Baptist Church from 1 to 4 p.m. with Dr. Cole of Greens boro in charge. All persons know ing of crippled people, particularly children, are asked to bring them to this clinic which is held once a month, for free examination and treatment. FOR THE HOUSE EDWARD T. HARRELL, young lawyer of this city, who is one of the eight announced candidates for the Lower House of the Gen eral Assembly. Mr. Harrell has been practising law here for the past three years. He announces on a “For McDonald” platform. FOR THE HOUSE PERRY C. MILLIKIN or Halifax, who has announced as a candidate for the House of Representatives subject to the Democratic pri mary. He was born at Halifax, the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Mil likin, prominent Halifax farmer, and has lived there all his life. He collected taxes for Halifax County for two years, has been assistant manager of the County Reemployment Office, and under County Agent W. O. Davis was supervisor of the 1933 cotton re duction program. Mr. Millikin has served six years as chairman of the Board of Stewards of the Halifax Methodist Church. Last year he was elected town aider man, leading the ticket. He is half-owner of the Halifax Mercan tile Co., enterprising business con cern at Halifax. More Highways For This Section of State -0 The dusty detour from Roanoke Rapids to Littleton will be-treated with calcium chloride this Sum mer, according to news received yesterday by F. C. Williams from W. C. Woodard, State Highway Commissioner. Mr. Woodard writes: “I am pleased to advise that I have se cured treatment of calcium chlo ride for your detour from Roanoke Rapids to Littleton; also you can expect contract to be let on Sea board road in June. The Roa noke Rapids-Littleton project will come up in Jifly. This about takes care of the road situation in your community.” The Seaboard road is the new road from Weldon to Seaboard, (Continued on Page 4) 6 NURSES GRADUATE ’36 CLASS Baccalaureate Services Next Sunday; Commencement Exercises Tuesday -o Six nurses, members of the 1936 Graduating Class of The Roanoke Rapids School of Nurs ing, Roanoke Rapids Hospital, will receive theirt diplomas at Com mencement Exercises to be held next Tuesday, May 19th, at 8:15 P. M. at the Junior-Senior High School Auditorium. The Bacca laureate Sermon will be delivered next Sunday, by Rev. E. B. Fish er, at 8 P. M. at the First Meth odist Church of Roanoke Rapids. Dr. Beverley R. Tucker, of Rich mond, head of the department of Neurology and Psychiatry at the Medical College of Virginia, will make the Commencement Address. Dr. Tucker is one of the most distinguished Neurologists in the country. He is considered an au thority on many subjects, and has written books and papers which have been widely read. The School of Nursing is to be con gratulated upon having such an outstanding doctor to make this address. The 1936 Class is exactly double that of last year. BERNARD ALLSBROOK Born in Scotland Neck, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Alls brook; has lived in Halifax Coun ty all of his life; was educated at Oak Ridge Institute and Wake Forest College, graduating at Wake Forest College in 1929. Since 1929 he lived in Enfield and Scotland Neck for three years. He has been practicing law in Roanoke Rapids as junior member of the law firm of Zollicoffer & Allsbrook since October 1932. Since locating in Roanoke Rapids he has been active in the civic and religious life of the community. His opponent is Wade H. Dick ens of Scotland Neck, who has held the office since the Court was created in 1931. Large Crowd Attends Roberson Funeral -0 Roy Roberson, 21, died at the Roanoke Rapids Hospital at 5 a. m. Monday morning. One of the largest crowds in recent years at tended the funeral services Tues day afternoon to pay homage to a high type youth who had many friends here. The service was at the Rosemary Baptist Church by Rev. J. E. Kirk with interment in Roanoke Rapids Cemetery. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Roberson, three brothers, Harry, Eugene and Ker mit; seven sisters, Mi's. Grady Baggett, Mrs. Willie Abhram, Mrs. Fred Allen, Mrs. Jim Reed, Mima, Irma and Louise, all of Roanoke Rapids.
