THURSDAY, July 1, 1937 NUMBER 51 UP AND DOWN WITH THE Ghe Avenue • • Born this afternoon, July 1st, at the Roanoke Rapids Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Mooney Green berg, a daughter ... a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Edwards on June 26 ... a son to Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Neathery on June 25 ... a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Birdsong on the 25th ... a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Rowell on the 25th ... Louise White, 6 months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John White of Garysburg died at the Roanoke Rapids Hospital on June 26th... L. B. Taylor, own er of Jackson’s Taylor Drug Co., is ill at the hos pital . . . Jack Nelson of Rich Square died here Wednesday. • • A new building for the Avenue started this week by Gerard Jones will be a 25 by 32 brick build ing at 229 Roanoke Avenue. It will be used for a barber shop and drink stand, says Mr. Jones, who may operate the business himself, altho he has sev eral applicants who wish to rent. • • To be completed during the month of July is the new Sinclair Service Station to which the stuc co is now being put. This will be painted white with green trim. The completion of the building was delayed when it was found the new place was partly on another piece of property. Part of it was torn down and rebuilt. *. UQzping along in tme snape is tne smith tio tel-Woolworth building on the corner of 10th and the Avenue. The outer brick walls are just about finished and work on the interior will get under way very soon. • • The Halifax County Medical Society will meet at the Roanoke Rapids Hospital on Friday night, July 9th. A good supper and a good pro gram are promised the medics ... The annual Health Elimination contest for this district will be held in the gymnasium of the Roanoke Rapids High School on Tuesday, July 13th. It is under stood health champions from 25 counties will be here. Dr. R. S. McGeachey, Halifax County health officer, will be in charge . . . Speaking of health, how about that good bed to sleep on, and good mat tress. We don’t advertise in this column, but the name of our favorite mattress, for healthful sleep ing, starts with an S and ends with the same letter. • • The last session of the legislature passed an act to regulate child labor in North Carolina and all those who employ minors under 18 years of age had better look out or the law will get them . . . One thing, if you employ minors under 18, you must get an employment certificate and the duty is on the employer to procure said certificate. Also an abstract of the Act must be displayed in the place of employment frequented by employees . . . you can l employ minors oerore i a.m. or alter 6 p.m. or girls under 18 after 9 p.m. and you can’t do this and you can’t do that . . . this act is effective today, July 1st, and this may explain to a lot of boys why we had to buy a folding machine .. . and may explain to other boys why labor-saving de vices will displace them all over the State ... as a matter of fact, a lot of boys and girls are going to have trouble getting jobs in the future on account of the act... however, the intent of the act is splendid, to preserve the health of the minors . . . if it just doesn’t work so as to discourage some of those who want to work, it will be fine. • • Young Frank Hawley, vacationing with his grandparents in Christiansburg, Va., fell from a tree yesterday and broke his arm ... This would be just another newsstory if it came during school... but we couldn’t help thinking how tough it must be on a healthy youngster to look forward to a swell vacation . . . swimming, jumping, riding, SCENE OF EXPLOSION Scene at J. R. Wollett Lumber Co. in Littleton, taken shortly after the terrific boiler explosion re cently which cost one life and did damage to the mill plant estimated at $25,000. Mark Jenkins died the same afternoon from burns received when scalded by steam. He was dragged from the debris and rushed to the hospital. The picture shows the boiler with the hole where the patch gave away. The boiler was blown high in the air. Much damage was done to other departments of the mill as can be seen from the picture. Rosemary Horseshoe Champions The machine shop crew captained by Bill Thompson this week emerged as undefeated champions in the Rosemary Horseshoe League. Outdistancing all other teams except McDowell’s number 2 carders, and with the tournament still several weeks to run, the two teams this week played off finals, the shop team winning the title. Members of the winning team are, from left to right: Ben Cullom,. Ralph Webb, Adam Tolbert, Captain Bill Thompson and Carlton Morris. J. Sanders, also on the team, does not appear in the picture. building, camping ... all the things a kid loves to do . . . and then to have it all vanish right at the first of vacation-time ... six weeks with an arm in cast and sling... the best six weeks of the year. SAM JONES IS REGULAR POLICEMAN Extra-policeman Sam Jones has been employed as a regular officer on the Roanoke Rapids Police force for the next thirty days to take the place of C. L. Massey, who was permanently relieved of duty as of last night. Another extra man will be em ployed for the next few weeks to relieve police on vacations, accord ing to Chief H. E. Dobbins. Of ficer Paul Luter is on his vaca tion this week. LAWYERS NARROW ESCAPE J. R. Allsbrook, attorney of Roa noke Rapids and former State Sen ator, narrowly escaped serious in jury or death Saturday night when his car was struck by another car between Weldon and Garysburg. Mr. Allsbrook was going to the home of his mother-in-law, Mrs. K& E. Arown, at Garysburg, to spend the night with his family who are visiting Mrs. Brown. As he was meeting a car, anoth er car tried to pass the one in front and on Mr. Allsbrook’s side of the road. He turned sharp to the right and avoided a head-on collision but the other car struck the Allsbrook car in the middle, turning it over several times. Mr. Allsbrook escaped serious injury by dropping to the floor of his car, which was practically demolished. A Negro pedestrian was struck a glancing blow by the tumbling car and received slight bruises. Officers Robinson and Kitchin of Weldon investigated the wreck and arrested the driver of the oth er car, a Mr. Hagan, mechanic for a Richmond motor company, who was on his way home at Goldsboro. Hagan was charged with reckless driving as the evidence showed he was at fault. He was lodged in jail Saturday night and released under bond for his appearance in North ampton Recorders Court on July 13th. Tax Board Committee Visits Here The Equalization committee for Roanoke Rapids Township, Com missioners J. R. Wrenn and June Collier and County Auditor Vin son, were in Roanoke Rapids to day looking over property on which owners had registered complaints as to valuation for taxation. The Board of Commissioners sat as an Equalizing Board at the June session and heard several com plaints from over the county. Com mittees are now following up those complaints. This is re-valuation year but the number of complaints was relatively small. Mrs. B. E. Lancaster and son, I Maxie returned Sunday from Cas ! talier.
