(The Richmond News Leader) ROANOKE RAPIDS^ N. C., Nov. 27.—A. Meikle, official of a Roa noke Rapids mill company, studied for years how he might picture to the world in some vivid way the birth of Christ. Four years ago he erected life-size models of the Wise Men, the manger and shep herds on a vacant lot next to his home here to consummate his dream. Thousands each year come to Roanoke Rapids to view this unique work which Meikle exhibits between Dec. 1 and Jan. 1. The scene includes a thatched roofed stable showing the cattle and the manger and the figures of Mary, Joseph and the Christ Child. Over the stable is a star which led the Wise Men to the birth place and a few feet away in mid-air are seen the angels. In the distance are the approaching Wise Men on their camels. Last year he added in the foreground the shepherds and their sheep at the well and nearby the overcrowded inn and its keeper. Flood lights have been placed to make the exhibit take on the most realistic of appearances. The life-size figures used are fashioned from a special kind of wood somewhat like veneer. The figures are first hand painted by Mr. Meikle’s assistant, Francis Starke, to resemble as nearly as possible those in the Bible pictures. He then cuts out and shellacs them to withstand the elements before placing them. Mr. Meikle, a native of Scotland, came to America in 1907. He has been a resident of Koanoke Rapids for a number of years. L. T. KING Lemuel Thomas King, age 60, died at his home, Littleton, Thurs day afternoon after a week’s illness from a paralytic stroke.
