with 22 each .. but Halifax ranks first on the basis
of number of cars licensed .. a first in which there

• • As in all other counties of the State, Halifax
County officials were sworn into office at Halifax
Monday; Clerk of the Superior Court A. L. Hux
for four years; for the first time under the hew
amendment, Sheriff Joe Riddick for four years
and Coroner T. M. Cooper for four years. Record
er Court Judge and Solicitor, members of the
County Board of Commissioners and County
Board of Education, a 11 re-elected without
opposition, were sworn into office for two year
terms.

• • W. J. Bright, WPA worker of Roanoke Rap
ids, received a severe back injury Monday when he
fell in a WPA ditch here. He is still in the Roanoke
Rapids Hospital.
• • Troop No. 146 Boy Scouts are collecting and
repairing old toys to be distributed Christmas to
children of needy families. If you have any that
you can donate, please call the Patterson Mills Co.
office, Telephone R-350, and a Scout will call by
your home for the toys. The Scouts have purchas
ed a complete set of tools and equipment to do the
repairing and painting. Any toy of any kind can
be used.
• • A splendid job was done by the new contrac
tor on the grounds around the Post Office build
ing . . the terrace has added much to the appear
ance of the front and side and will help guard a
gainst washing and trespassing .. Also to help the
last will be the official U. S. keep-off signs . . It
took Postmaster Shell months to break thru the
redtape and get a new contract for the landscaping
but it now looks as if this job will be worth the
effort.
• • Prof. Christians Neilson, Danish artist paint
ing some new scenery for the High School stage,
is quoted as saying he could have painted the P. O.
mural in a couple hours . . He will prove his con
tention when he paints a couple of pictures before
an audience at the High School this Friday and
Saturday nights . . the pictures will be 8 feet by
6 feet in size and will be done completely during a
part of the program.
• • Halifax County is credited or rather discred
ited with 22 highway deaths in the first ten
months of 1938 by the State Highway Safety Di
