TRAPPED COMING IN DOOR Lester Cook Meets Intruder At Door With Shot Gun Shelby Bennett, Roanoke Rapids colored man of about 25 years of age, is being held without bond in the Halifax jail on a charge of first degree burglary, having en tered the home of W. P. Cook on the Halifax road about two miles southeast of Roanoke Rapids last Sunday morning about 2:30. Bennett was heard by Mr. Cook’s son, Lester, gs he opened a screen door leading into a screened-in porch at the front of the house. The boy, who was waked by the noise of the door’s being forced open, picked up a shot gun and met the intruder as he stepped into the porch. Covering the negro with the gun, he called to the other members of the family who came to his aid. While Mr. Cook held the burglar at bay with the gun, one of his sons got word to Officer Jack Brigman, who went and took the negro into custody. When the of ficer arrived, he found the negro seated with Mr. Cook sitting oppo site him, holding the shot gun at a business-like angle. Upon being searched, the Negro was found to have in his pocket a large pocket knife, his only wea pon. The knife was one of the arge barlow single-blade type, long enough to be termed a deadly weapon. Bennett waived his preliminary hearing before W. O. Thompson in Mayor’s court Monday morning. He is being held for the October 3 term of Superior Court without bond. First degree burglary carries a death sentence penalty. Bennett told officers that he thought he was entering the home of a Air. Fulgham who lives about two miles from the Cook home. He was, he said, intending to pay some rent that his brother owed All-. Fulgham. He had only a dol lar in his pockets at the time of his arrest. Air. Cook, his wife, and two sons were in the house at the time the negro entered.
