King, fC«nnie Wright, Hal Ross, Jr. Mr. Smith was born on Septem ber 20, 1887 in Nash County, com ing to Roanoke Rapids with his parents, Fenner and Olivia Smith, when he was twelve years old. He Started in business, estimated to day to run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, in a filling Station located on the present site Of Taylor’s Drug Store. Since that Ume he has grown in the business field with rapid strides, owning Valuable property throughout the City. Among his holdings are the Smith Hotel building, the Smith building, the building in which the Orizzard Service Station is located, the old Skating Rink at the Junc tion, and residential property on Hamilton and Jackson Streets. He is also reported to have holdings in other businesses in the city. Mr. Smith of late years has been interested in the politics of the City, having served as Commission- i er in 1935-36, ran for Mayor in 1937, and was a member of the Board of Commissioners at the time of his death, having been e lected in May of this year. S. Rosemary Citizen Dies John Frank Kittrell, 62, died sud denly at his home in South Rose mary last Saturday. The remains were taken to Henderson for fu neral services Monday. He was buried in the family burying ground near Henderson. Mr. Kittrell, who came here from Vance County about ten years ago, is survived by his wife and several children. School Girl Dies In Hospital Tues. Dorothy Ann Simmons, 9, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Percy D. Sim mons of 726 Jefferson Street, died in the Roanoke Rapids Hospital Tuesday after an illness of four weeks. Funeral services were con ducted at the home Wednesday afternoon at 3:30, Rev. F. W. Hay nie officiating. Interment was in the Roanoke Rapids Cemetery. The deceased is survived by her parents; one sister, Iris Jean; and two brothers, Horace and Percy, Jr. Pallbearers were Dr. Johnnie Martin, Dr. B. E. Stephenson, V. I. Powell, and E. B. Bowman. Flower girls were nine of Dorothy Ann’s classmates from Miss LeGrande El liott’s room at Central School. City Buys 2 New V/2-Ton Trucks Two new m ton trucks have been recently purchased by the City. A Ford truck was bought last Friday and a Chevrolet on the following Saturday. These new trucks will be numbered 9 and 10, making a total of seven trucks owned by the city, the numbers running from 4 through 10. The two oldest trucks will be turned over temporarily to the WPA for use in the cross streets paving project. * \ Wreck Sends 4 Women To RR Hospital Four women, two from New York State and two from New Jersey, were brought to the Roanoke Rap ids Hospital by ambulance today as a result of a wreck near the highway intersection at Pleasant Hill. Miss Eleanor Wilbur, of Montgomery, N. Y., was found to be the most seriously injured, suf fering from a shoulder and possible neck injury. The other occupants of the car, Mrs. Jane Nolan of Plainsfield, N. J„ Miss Grace Clapsaddle, of Plainsfield, N. J., and Miss Anna Wilson, of Worcester, N. Y„ receiv ed only slight bruises. Miss Clap saddle was driving the car, which turned over after a tire blew out. The women were on their way to Florida. Out-of-Town Patients At Hospital In the Roanoke Rapids Hospital this week the out-of-town patients include Mrs. Buckston Midyette of Jackson, Matthew Mitchell of Em poria, Miss Bernice Morris of Em poria, A. J. Pope of Weldon, Mrs. Gilmer Ricks of Conway, Mrs. Ma con Salmon of Littleton, Mrs. Eliz abeth Shaw of Emporia. Miss Marie Benn Of Yultare Buried Miss Marie Ann Benn of Vultare died at the home of her brother, Cyrus Benn, last Friday after an illness of several weeks. Funeral services were held at the grave Saturday afternoon, the Rev. Mr. Sawyer of Garysburg officiating. The deceased is survived by a sister, Mrs. Sallie Parker of Wood land, two brothers, Cyrus, of Vul tare, and Jim, of Weldon. Miss Benn was a member of the Oak Grove Church and an out standing leader in church and civic affairs of the community. COUNTY BOARD IN REGULAR MEET MONDAY The County Board of Commis sioners met Monday, November 6, with all members present. The regular routine of county business passed before the Board, a num ber of bills being checked and veri fied. A group of women appeared be fore the Commissioner in behalf of the proposed Federal project on Quankie Creek. The Board sanc tioned this work and promised any aid that they might give. Dr. Sykes, County Health Offic er, made his monthly report, giv ing the number of clinics held and reporting various other activities. Mrs. Wheeler, County Home Dem onstration Agent, gave a report of her activities during the month. A delegation appeared before the meeting to ask for aid for under privileged children in the county, rhey were referred to the Welfare agent, J. B. Holmes, who later gave a resume of the welfare work dur ing October. The Board adopted a resolution to push the work on the Enfield Tillery road. It is hoped that this road will be hard-surfaced in the near future. A resolution was adopted asking the N. C. Utilities to grant Carolina Coach Company the right to estab lish a bus line from Raleigh, through Louisburg to Roanoke Rapids. . Accepts Position Virginia Hospital Mrs. James Simms, formerly Miss Drake, resigned at Roanoke Rapids Hospital after having been em ployed there since 1933. She has accepted a position at Mary Wash ington Hospital at Fredericksburg, Va. After November 15th, she will take up her new duties there. Calvary Church Sunday School Sunday morning at 10:00. Please come, please be on time, and bring someone with you. Lee Griffin Hurt In Va. Wreck Sat. Lee Griffin, Roanoke Rapids High School Senior and son of L. S. Griffin of South Rosemary, is critically ill in the Roanoke Rapids Hospital today as a result of an automobile accident in Virginia late last Saturday night. The in jured boy suffered a head injury and later contracted meningitis. E. R. Capps and Harry Steines, both Roanoke Rapids boys, were with Griffin when the accident oc curred. Neither was injured seri ously. It is reported that the car in which the Roanoke Rapids boys were riding met another on a Vir ginia road head on, the lights blind ing the drivers of both cars. BIRTHS ! The following births were an nounced by the Roanoke Rapids Hospital this week: to Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Ray, a girl, November 3; to Mr. and Mrs. Braxton Cooper, a girl, November 4; to Mr. and Mrs. Macon Salmon, a girl, November 5; to Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Litchfield, a girl, November 6; to Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Ogletree, a boy, Novem ber 5. ’ School to Observe Armistice Day Armistice Day will be observed by the Roanoke Rapids High School Friday at 11 o’clock. Julian Allsbrook, Roanoke Rapids lawyer and former State Senator, will ad dress the student body. Special music will be rendered by the mu sic department. Firemen’s Carnival Tickets are on sale now for the Firemen’s Carnival which will be held at the Halifax Club House Friday night, November 77. Birth Announcement Mr. and Mrs. Owen Bellamy, of Enfield, announce the birth of a daughter, Priscilla Ann, on Tues day, October the 24th. The little girl has an attractive brother, Owen Holt Bellamy.
