NINE 4-H CLUBS PARTICIPATE IN HEALTH PAGEANT _ - - THEODORE RAY AMD THER ESA BOS W ELL ARE HEALTHIEST_ On last Thursday evening, 4-H Club members from the nine county clubs, with their parents, met at the Country Club on the Roanoke Rapids-Weldon Highway to witness the Health Pageant, “The Key”. Thomas Hockaday as keeper of the "Key”, presented "Sunshine", “Fresh Air”, "Rest”, “Exercise”, “Courage”, “Clothing”, "Food’, "Cleanliness”, and “Good Posture , taken respectively by the nine clubs: Hobgood, Ringwood, Tillery, Roanoke Rapids, William R. Davie, Hollister, Aurelian Springs, En field, and Weldon. As the combination was com pleted the Halifax County Health contest winners, Theodore Ray and Theresa Boswell, were released from the safe by the keeper, and were crowneu King and Queen of Health by Mrs. East, Super visor of Halifax County Public Health Nurses. At the end of the Health Pag eant the 4-H Club Parents’ Ban quet was held in the Club House. Bobby Bounds, president of the County Council of 4-H Clubs, was Master of Ceremonies. Others tak ing part on this program were Mrs. B. A. Whitley of the Hardra •wee Club, who gave the response to the toast to “parents”, Mrs. Elliot Clark sang “Trees”; County Farm Agent W. O. Davis, talked on “4-H Club Work”, and as guests of the occasion, Mr. Julian Allsbrook and Mrs L. M. Butts responded with words cf inspira tion and courage. Invited guests were Represen tative E. L. Travis, B. B. Everett, and Julian Allsbrook; County Commissioners Waldo Whitaker, M. W. Perry, N. W. Warren, J. R_ Wrenn, and W. J. Collier; County Health Department Offi cials Dr. Robert F. Young and Mrs. East; President of the Coun try Club Board of Directors, Dr. Upshur Higgenbotb?m; and Presi dent of Home Demonstration Cxubs, Mrs. L. M. Butts. JESSE JAMES IN PERSON WILL BE SEEN AT LEVON “Rage In Heaven” is the stellar attraction opening a week of smash hits from filmdom at the Levon Theatre in Weldon on Sunday and Monday, June 22-23. Robert Mont gomery and Ingrid Bergman have the leading roles in the picture, and there will also be shown news and an act. Tuesday the Levon has schedul ed as the act of the week, Jesse James, in person. James, in case you have forgotten, was a Mis souri outlaw of some yars ago and millions of words have been writ ten about the exploits of the gang headed by Jesre and his brother, Frank James. Jesse, in the flesh, will be seen on the Levon stage .next Tuesday. Edward G. Robinson has the title jroie in “The Sea Wolf”, a saga of the whaling ships and a man too tough to be tamed, at the Levon on Thursday and Friday. John Gar field and Ida Lupino have support ing roles in the film, and a comedy and act will complete the program for the two days. Saturday the Levon will show Johnny Mack Brown in "Law of the Range”, and James Dunn and Frances Gifford in “Hold That Wo man”. In addition to the double feature, Chapter 8 of “White Eagle” is scheduled. CLUB MEETS The South Rosemary Home De monstration Club held its regular monthly meeting Wednesday, June 11th, in the home of Mrs. D. P. Wike. In the absence of Mrs. M. E. Faison, the president, Mrs. E. R. Hawkins, vice-president, presided. After the local business was discussed, the meeting was turned over to Mr. Moody of the Sani tary department, who gave a very interesting talk on “The Family Cow”, stressing the importance of thorough cleanliness in handling milk. Mrs. Hazel E. Wheeler gave a short talk about the 4-H camp to be held at Jamestown, Va. After the meeting, sandwiches, cookies and Pepsi-cola were ser ved by the hostesses for the month who were Mrs. J. M. Garriss and Mrs. D. P. Wike. The following members and visi tors were present: Mesdames Hazel Wheeler, E. R. Hawkins, Charlie Cook, Robert Parrish, Ro bert Powell, Annie Pittard, V. B. Carter, L. A. Daniel, L. H. North ington, Pauline Northington, Ada Gray, Lee Wheeden, L. L. Mad ron, J M. Garriss, Mertie Fai son and Mr. Moody. Pitts' Theatre Attractions For Week Announced The Pitts Theatre in Emporia, Va., is offering today and tomor row, Alice Faye and Don Ameche in “That Night in Rio”, with Car men Miranda. A musical extrava ganza with a number of current song hits, the picture is in techni ;olor. Saturday, June 21, only, the Pitts’ offers the Three Mesquiteers in ‘Under Texas Skies”. An extra ittraction Saturday is official ring side pictures of the “fight of the ;entury“ between Joe Louis and Buddy Baer. “Las Vegas Nights”, featuring :hat sentimental gentleman of swing, Tommy Dorsey, and his or t heslra, will be shown at the Pitts on Sunday, June 22, only. Spencer Tracy and Mickey Roo ney come to the Pitts’ on Monday ?.nd Tuesday, June 23-24, in “Men of Boy’s Town”. HONORED Mr. and Mrs. W. A. China of Roanoke Rapids and Mr. and Mrs. William Douglas Smith of Eliza beth City entertained at a supper Sunday, June 15th, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. China, honoring Mr. and Mrs. Randolph Allen, who were recently married with a for mal ceremony in the Methodist Church in Plymouth. Mrs. Allen was formerly Miss Elizabeth Campbell of Plymouth and Mr. Allen a former resident of Littleton. He is the brother of Mrs. China and Mrs. Smith. The home was effectively decorated throughout with flowers in pastel shades. A two-course supper was served at tables arranged on the lawn. Guests enjoying this de lightful occasion were: Mr. and Mrs. Randolph Allen, Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler Manning of Williamston; Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Campbell, May or and Mrs. B. G. Campbell and Dr. and Mrs. Lewis of Plymouth; Mrs. M. H. Allen of Littleton; Miss Sarah Belle Smith of Eli zabeth City; Miss Ruth McLeod of Maxton, and Mrs. Marcus Allen of Florence, S. C. COMPLIMENTS BRIDE Tuesday evening Mrs. Bennie McCrary entertained at a mis cellaneous shower complimenting Mrs. Clifton Boyd, a recent bride. At refreshment hour a salad course was served. Guests included Mesdames Clif ton Boyd, R. E. Merritt, T. B. Turner, Tom Johnson, Eugene Etheridge, Linwood and Edward Allen, Waiter Kee„ F. M. Coburn, E. R. Hawkins, Carlton Morris, Lucille Cherry, and Misses Clyde Fulghum and Myrtle and Lois Lyles. Miss Ruth McLeod of Maxton, Marcus Allen of Florence, S. C., Mr. and Mrs. W. D.
