Softball fans in Roanoke Rapids will be served a special dish (if weather permits) this Friday and Saturday nights at Ledgerwood Park, Rosemary—for instance—on Friday night Coach Gabby Street will bring his powerful Rowletts team here for a double-header— they are walking away with the fast Capital City League—and will bring Richmond’s greatest softball stars—“Legs” Bolling, Ovand Mal lory, Bill Covington, Lynn Kennett, Fred Beilfuss. The first game be gins at 8 p.m. —o— On Saturday night George Neth ercutt, former Owl baseball star, will lead the Y.M.B.C. team from Raleigh here for a double-header at Ledgerwood Park. Another local boy, Jack Vincent, will play the outfield for Y.M.B.C. The visitors are leading the fast Class A Circuit in Raleigh. Among the other stars on the visiting team will be Harry Montgomery, former football star at Carolina—Earl Ruth, great U. N.C. basketball star, Bruno Man gum, N.C.S. flash at shortstop; Kemp Weaver, former Duke star; and Elmo Fish, who performed in the Tobacco State League last sea son. The first game begins at 8 p.m. sharp. The outstanding stars on both teams are former college and prep school stars. Come out and see how our softball compares with that played in other cities. The Roman cos after a slow start have finally started clicking, and are looking more like a ball club each game. The Romaneos are slated for a full program this week. On Mon day night they played a City League game with Roanoke No. Z Red Raiders—on Wednesday night a City League game with Roanoke No. 1 “Riversiders”—on Thursday night Abbotts Collegians of South Norfolk, Va. at Murfreesboro, o pening their new municipal softball field. Friday night Rowletts of Richmond, Va. Saturday night V. M. B. C. of Raleigh, N. C. I am thinking of giving them a rest on Sunday. —o— Howard Simpson, former Pilot Mills shortstop who performed in that never-to-be-forgotten twenty five inning championship softball game between the Romaneos and Pilot Mills, will don a Roanoke No. 2 Red Raider uniform in the City Softball League beginning next week. Simpson is a classy infielder who should be welcome on any man’s ball club. Glad to see you back, Howard! —o— Clarence “Clancy” Byrd was ap pointed umpire-in-charge of the City Softball League at a board meeting held Tuesday night at the Municipal Bldg. Byrd was appoints ed after ‘Scoopey” Dickens had to resign due to business reasons. All City League games were moved up to start at 8 p.m. at all fields. —o— The Patterson Mill Pirates trot ted on the field Monday night a gainst Roanoke No. 1 “Riversiders” arrayed in a nifty new set of uni forms, giving them one of the best dressed teams in the City League. They have given their old uni forms to the Bees and believe me it gives Patterson two nicely dress ed ball clubs. They will be hard to stop from now on. —o— The regular weekly square dance will be held at Rosemary Recrea tion Club on Saturday night begin ning promptly at 8 p.m. and ending at midnight. Music will be by the “Carolina Troubadours”, figure calling by Marvin House. Admis sion is ladles fifteen cents, gentle men thirty-five cents. The dance is in charge of Collins Pridgen and JEugene Blowe. The dances have proved to be very popular with large crowds attending every Sat urday night. —o— I am pleased to announce that the Roanoke Rapids girls softball team will play Henderson here or there next Wednesday night. The girls defeated Henderson here last week and will play Henderson here or at Henderson next Wednesday. Henderson has a very good team, or at least that’s what the Hen derson coach told me when Hen derson played our girls at Hen derson last week. Admission will be ten cents. Pickups N’ Putouts: “I done and busted my big toe flat, an’ I ain’t gonna play no more”. So said Helen Stewart, blonde catcher on the girls team, and she meant it. It happened in the Henderson game last Friday— latest reports indicate the toe is doing okay—I’ve heard of the Jones Boys—but the local girls team can really boast of the Jones Girls —all from downtown—DuPont with Lefty Bill Harlow will be here next Friday, June 27th. He is the only "Windmiller” in the South—The jumping jack antics of First Base man Lefty Everett of the Roman cos leaves the fans goggle-eyed— Mrs. Lefty says it’s coffee nerves— A -Ci- __ _ _ 1_• _<l_ <i. i* ' *» u. wiun up KMb w gen uu ct ui the Romancos graciously presented me with a box of Postum—for my nerves—Messrs. Mac Outland, Russ Deberry and Swink Lee were greatly horrified and offended when I told them where to stick it—such language! Rufus “Tony” Mountford will be back on the job Monday!
