Men Deferred Are Urged To Help Defense All Selective Service registrants who have been deferred from mili tary service today were urged by General J. Van B. Metts, State Di rector of Selective Service, to offer their full assistance to State and local civilian defense agencies. Many young men have been granted deferment because of their occupations, because they have de pendents or because they are not physically capable of undergoing service in the armed forces, the General said. Nevertheless, he added, they are qualified to per form some work in connection with civilian defense activities and should offer their services to exist ing agencies or those which are be ing organized. By granting certain men defer ment, Congress, when it adopted the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940. gave no indication that it intended to excuse these men from the obligation which rests upon every young man—that of helping his country in times of e mergency, General Metts declared. Each man is expected to do his share, in one way or another, when a crisis threatens the national se curity, he said. cent statement of Brig. Gen. Lew General Metts quoted from a re is B. Hershey, Director of Selective Service, as follows: “Many of our young men have entered the armed forces, leaving at home others who for one rea son or another have had their mil itary training deferred. Those who remain owe it to those who have been called and owe it to their country to help in its defense when they are needed. “They can do their part by of fering their services in the inter ests of civilian defense.” Pointing out that the Office of Civilian Defense is coodinating ci vilian defense activities of the State and expanding them to com munities where they are not or ganized as yet, the State Director said that in the very near future the vast majority of deferred reg istrants should be able to find a civilian defense activity where their services can be used. Such activities cover a wide range and should include a task for almost every young man who is deferred from military training for one rea son or another. TOWN TALK Mr. and Mrs. N. H. Owens, Misse!
