Tarboro Edges Win Over Yellow Jackets, 12-9, in Thrilling Game Last Week Locals' Passing Attack Fails In Final Minutes The Roanoke Rapids Yellow Jackets were defeated, 12-9, at Tarboro last Friday night in a thrilling game which saw Saxon, Tarboro’s fullback, returning the opening kickoff to the locals’ 46 yard line to get the Tarboro run ning attack underway. Bo Carter scored Tarboro’s first touchdown, in the first quarter on a 28-yard run on a reverse play. Tarboro tried to plunge the line for the extra point, but got stop ped at the line of scrimmage. Taking the kickoff after Tarboro scored, the Yellow Jackets return ed it to their own forty. After successive first downs were made, Bray carried the pigskin over the goal. Theron Harris, shifted from center to a backfield spot, hit the line to make the extra point to put the Yellow Jackets ahead, 7 6, at the end of the period. In the second quarter Tarboro unleased an aerial attack, which brought a touchdown when Mar tin Sasser snagged one to take the ball into pay-off territory. Try for point failed. The locals got deep in Tarboro’s bailiwick in the third period on driving power of Gordon “Go-Go” Dobbins and Leatherwood, but had to punt and the ball was downed on Tarboro’s 10-yard line. The opening minutes of the last quarter found Tarboro attempting to punt out of danger, but Roa noke Rapids got a safety when the Tarboro center passed over the backfield into the end-zone. Tarboro covered for a safety, and then kicked from their 20 yard line. The Yellow Jackets then got moving for another touchdown drive which failed when a pass was dropped in the end-zone. The locals mixed their line plays with a passing attack, featuring Dobbins as the passer, which car ried the ball to Tarboro’s 18. Then Dobbins chunked a pass to Clements over the goal, but the receiver coundn't hang onto the ball. Carter and Pete Clark made kickoff returns for 55 and 60 yards, respectively, for Tarboro to shine in the backfield with Saxon. Matthews was outstanding in the Roanoke Rapids line, and Harris, Bray and Dobbins featur ed in the backfield.
