To the Editor: During a recent term of the Superior Court at Hal ifax the writer had the privilege to sit as a juryman and listen to the judge expound in solemn tones the dignity of the court. It must be below the dignity of the sher iff to clean up the Courthouse once in a while, so what the court lacks in cleanliness perhaps it makes up in dignity. After the judge thoroughly con vinced us of the dignity of the court we proceeded at a snail’s pace to grind out justice. Things seemed to move unusually slow from the start. We had a jury costing more than $100 a day and had started on the fourth day and hadn’t collected any costs, so to speak. Some of the jurymen were beginning to think we would have to go home without any pay until the divorce mill was brought out After that business picked up. We ground out di vorces for a while at the rate of about one every ten minutes. This divorce business suggests a big idea. Why hadn’t the Cham ber of Commerce officials of Hali fax thought of it before? There sits old Halifax in the same spot it was when George Washington stopped there about 150 years ago, and about the only town he would recognize were he to come back; so why not make Halifax another Reno? Folks wouldn’t go clear across the country and take up residence in Nevada for several weeks just to get a divorce when they could go to Halifax and get one in ten minutes.
