"We Have a Solemn Duty../' TO OUR WOUNDED.—The Victory Loan affords the people of a grateful nation an opportunity to show by action their thankfulness to our disabled soldiers. It is this Victory Loan which shall help to make it possible to hospitalize and rehabilitate them, so that they may take again their rightful places in society. We cannot fail—we must not fail these heroes of ours. Dimes Drive Not Connected With Any Other Fund Appeal In response to inquiries from the public, Dr. Ralph W. McDonald, North Carolina State Chairman of the-JVTarch of Dimes, emphasized today that the nationwide March of Dimes,’ to be conducted January 14-31" as usual, has no connection with any other infantile paralysis fund appeal. The March of Dimes, he said, has become synonymous with the organized fight against poliomyeli tis directed and unified by The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, whose 1946 campaign will. be. commemorative of the late Franklin D. Roosevelt, who creat ed the National Foundation and symbolized its continuing crusade. Reviewing the critical Hickory epidemic of 19-14 and the famous "Miracle of Hickory” achieved by those, who fought the Great Crip tiler's invasion of Catawba River valley, Dr. McDonald said . “The National Foundation sent $693,004 in emergency aid into this state to fight the Hickory epidem ic and to provide continuing care and. treatment this year for those who.were stricken during that at tack. “However, the National Founda tion's 50 percent share of this state’s March of Dimes contribu tions from 1939 to 1945, inclusive, was $425,393. In Other words, the national organization has sent more funds into this state in a year and a half than it received in seven years.” Dr. McDonald said that half of all contributions to the March of Dimes will remain in the local communities to provide hospitali zation, professional care and treat ment, special equipment, supplies, transportation and all other ser vices connected ^ith the costly and often prolonged treatment of poliomyelitis. With the remaining 50 percent, he said, the National Foundation will continue to encourage and fi nance worthy scientific research, extend financial aid to County Chapters overburdened with costs of polio epidemics in their locali ties, obtain additional emergency medical assistance, train compe tent personnel in modern techni ques of combatting polio and deliv er the facts about polio to the American people. In the eight years since its foundation, the National Founda tion has disbursed more than $2, 000,000 in epidemic aid and appro priated more than $8,000,000 for research and education, Dr. Mc Donald said.
