Jax Baseballers (Continued from page S—Sec. C) John Crutchfield and Marion Brown have progressed rapidly and are slated for duty. The remaining righthanders are Eugene Tidwell and Linwood Williams who are improving each day. Jacket catching again is headed by Buddy Wrenn, who was out most of last year because of a cracked ankle. William George completes the receiving staff. Wrenn had a batting average of 407 last season, while George batted .333. At the initial sack is Wylie War ren, a veteran of last year’s squad who batted 350. C. D. Clark and Lewis Butler are the other can didates, neither having any pre vious experience. Charles Smith, the teams lead ing batter in 1945, is back at his old keystone sack. Smith held a .365 average. Other contenders for the post are Wilson Jenkins and Lewis Smith, both who saw action last season. A. R. Hardison and Vance Stew art are the battlees for the reg ular shotstop post. Hardison has more experience under his belt than Stewart, but as it stands now, Stewart i3 really staging a battle .although Hardison is ex pected to gain the starting edge. The third base slot will be fill ed by the veteran Willis Murphrey a .333 hitter last season, who un doubtedly will come through with a better year at the plate. With Novarro Hux as his understudy, the Jax have rather a healthy complexion in the infield. In the outfield, Hoyle has Billy Stacia, a power ’ hitter who batted .354 last year as the only regu lar from the 1345 squad. But he has Bill Hawkins, Bobby Weiss, Lmwood Butler, and Mason Harps, all who saw enough action for regular duty in the outer patrol. Butler was shifted to the catch ing slot last season when Wrenn cracked his ankle and turned in a good job there. Weiss and Hawkins played in more than half of the games last year and are developing into much-improved hit ters. Harps is expected to see con siderable experience this season. He batted .250 in 1945. Other outfielders are Charles Pullen and Donald MacKenzie, neither who has played any high school ball before. Only outstanding losses from the 1945 squad are Adres Fisher, lead ing pitcher, Maxie Clippard, slug ging outfielder, and Buck , Rose, who divided mound duties with the initial sack. Anyway, to sum it all up, if its pitching comes along, the Jax should be right up there on top, battling away for the Class B Northeastern Conference crown.
