ABOUT MILK | ' By DR. ROBERT F. YOUNG, District Health Officer Recently we called to the atten tion of the public that some com munil ies in Halifax County notably Roanoke Rapids—are now under a minimum milk code, which allows Grade C, or barn yard” milk to be sold. Grade C milk is the lowest grade of milk a United States Public Health Service milk code will allow. This grade of milk is permitted to run a bacteria count as high as 4,000, 000 per cubic centimeter; where as, Grade A Pasteurized milk is allowed a count of only 30,000 bac teria per cc. In other words, Grade C milk is allowed THIRTEEN times as many bacteria as Grade A Pasteurized Milk, and the num ber THIRTEEN IS CERTAINLY OMINOUS in this instance and should be avoided. The public should always insist on the milk it buys HAVING A GRADE, and should buy the HIGHEST GRADE milk available —remembering that the lower the grade of milk, the more bacteria the milk contains and the lower the sanitary code by which this milk is produced. It is only fair that milk pro ducers and handlers receive a fair profit for their milk; but this should NOT be brought about by forcing a lower grade of milk on the public. Rather, high quality milk, such as Grade A Pasteurized and Grade A Raw should be sold at a higher price. I’m quite sure the public is willing to pay such a PREMIUM FOR HEALTH, particularly when this premium is for safe milk—the backbone of a child’s diet. Garland Culbreth of Richmond is spending the week with Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Culbreth. This is the story of J. N. Emer son prominent west coast mer chant and retail store owner, who last week completed a 24-year climb of the service organization ladder to become president of Ki wanis International, which em braces more than 163,000 business and professional leaders in some 2,400 communities throughout the United States and Canada. A charter member of the Ki wanis Club in his home city of Pullman, Wash., Emerson has held practically every office, served on a large number of district and in ternational committees and direct ed many activities during his long career. He believes that Kiwanis is an organization built on per sonal service and backs this con tention by his activities and a rec ord of 17 years of perfect club at tendance. As the successor of Hamilton Holt, widely known Georgia gran ite and marble producer, Emerson will move the president’s office from Macon to Spokane, although Pullman will continue to be the presidenFs club. His counsel and administrative assistance will come from the new officers elected at the organization’s 1946 Victory Convention and members of the board of trustees. Officers elected this year at At-1 lantic City follow: Dr. Charles W. Armstrong, Sal isbury, N. C., physician and health officer, and John M. Burden, To ronto, Ont., barrister and solicitor, vice presidents from the United States and Canada, respectively, and J. Belmont Mosser, St. Marys, Pa., industrial sales manager, treasurer. Average cost of driving a motor ear a mile in 1902 was 18 cents; by 1938 it had dropped to 3.1 cents. Kiwanis Head J. N.
