' -'^pe is no question ot the pride Koanone ivap . ids residents have for their home city, but the question can rightly be asked: what are you doing to contribute to a better Roanoke Rapids? Are you . “letting George do it?” Full beauty for this city can be aeceomplished only when everyone will join in the program. Yes, our city is young, but let’s be determined to grow beautiful with age. Let’s make the tran sition ... to beauty. Let’s add beauty to the other glamorous words which define Roanoke Rapids. It’s springtime in season and in the life of Roa noke Rapids. Let’s do our part NOW! _i: L F On last week's issue of The Herald, it was stated that Doyle Dobbins, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Dobbins, had lost his job as commercial manager of the radio station in Haskell, Texas, inad dition to the loss he suffered in a recent fire. The radio station for which he worked “ was in a had financial way." Dobbins, along with othe employees, was forced to quit. Miss Katie Cozzens and Mrs. Ann Cox atended the North Caro lina Society of X-ray Technic ians in Durham Saturday. NEEDED: A LOCAL PEANUT MARKET That tasty little nut. the pea nut, loved by kids and grown ups alike, a popular dilicaey the world over, has become an in creasingly important factor in this area. Farmers have learned that by raising peanuts on land suited for it, (and most land in this region is j ideally suited to the growth of j this legume) they can enrich their soil for the better productivity of other crops. And in process of ro tating crops the peanut, in itself, is a good crop, furnishing both the profitable nut and a plant which is extremely nutritious as a livestock food and a fertilizer for the soil. With the increased production of the peanut and the growth of this city, what is now needed is a Roanoke Rapids peanut market. Farmers who do their trading in Roanoke Rapids generally must go to other markets to dispose of their peanuts. That injuries locaJ trade; it burns away those who desire to come here. That's not good sense and it is not good business. . . for Roanoke Rapids. Why should a farmer who is bringing to this city a load of cotton or logs be denied the pri vilege of tossing in a couple of bags of peanuts for the local mar keting? Only because there is no peanut market here. All of which there is here today an opportunity for some smart MOTHERS DAY SPECIALS ★ Mother's Day Remembrance DUTCH MAID ICE CREAM ★ 3-LAYER CAKE Chocolate.$3.00 Vanilla.$1.75 Strawberry.$1.00 ★ Phone Orders by May 10th.
