The Stentorian—March 27, 1987, Page Three. Feature Page u SLACK DISEASE ff HITS SENIORS By Kelley Brooke Snyder Vfhen I was asked to write an article about senioritis, my first thought was not to do it. A blank space with the heading Senioritis would most accurately represent this blessing/curse. Then I realized that would probably get me kicked off the staff. I needed to know exactly what senioritis is. My editor Svati Shodhan described it as "that general apathetic lethargy that possesses every second semester senior...[It*s] an attitude rather than an actual thing, indigenous only to seniors." I have a few complaints with her Stephen Roberts hides from his schoolwork. definition. First, "every" is a strong word. In addition, I know a lot of juniors who have senioritis and seniors that claim to have had it for years. David Thompson told me, "Senioritis is what I've been doing for 10 years, only now I have an excuse for it." I took a good look at myself and realized ’ that Senioritis had already taken effect. For one thing, I didn't start this article until the day before it was due. All 1 need to do is pass all my courses. When my third period class is canceled on Tuesday, I can sleep till 11:30. I guess I qualify as having Senioritis. But what exactly is it? When Webster's failed me, I hit the hallways. First the seniors. "More than a junior but less than a freshman." -Alex McLawhorn "Not wanting to do work because you're already in college; being mean to juniors because seniors are better, and missing the [old] seniors." -Julie Johnson susan K. Wallace an during free time. "Having more free classes than real classes." -Jeff Tolle "It's an intestinal disorder, kind of like enlarged lymph nodes." -Sean Blanton "Apathy...not having a Wilson class." -Dean Hembree "[It's a] stupid term people make up when they have to write papers..." -Herbie Kerner "The urge to lie in the grass on a beautiful afternoon when you still have two classes left." -Richard Davis To take the least amount of' classes and the most amount of crip courses." -Rodney Freeman REGALIS BRINGS EXCITEMENT TO CLASSES By Jennifer Larson Martha Regalis joined the NCSSM Humanities Department staff in August as a teacher of Writing / American Literature and WRRD. "Ms. Regalis brings a new excitement to the literature we discuss," said Gretchen Case, a senior in WRRD. This excitement, as well as her experience teaching Spanish, freshman composition, and logic and rhetoric at Louisiana State Univer sity, (LSU), makes Regalis a valuable addition to the NCSSM faculty. Regalis came tc NCSSM with a bachelor's degree (with high honors) In English . from. ,Cl?iP9Pn University and a master's degree in English with a Spanish minor from LSU. The lively students and "cozy" campus were the first things that attracted Ms. Regalis. When asked how her Initial perceptions of the school had changed, Regalis replied, "Now that I know the place, I can really appreciate the sense of community." Ms. Regalis is currently working on her dissertation, to be presented in August. The title is "Decadent Style as a Mode of Self- Creation in the Works of Henry Adams". When she' s not working on her disserta tion, she jogs with her Siberian husky Sam, plays the piano, and studies astrology. She also enjoys reading auto-biographies, 18th Century British literature, and contem porary Latin American novels. "Signing up for Advanced Writing and Mechanical Drawing; planning to drop something to have good sleeping days." -Patrick Lea "Having too many things to do at one time- applications, interviews, mentorship journal; your social life is lacking because you're old, you can't find your homework because you're senile, and you compare problems with your senior roommate and it only makes you feel worse." -Marla Trent Next, I turned to the only people who might have more experience with Senioritis than the seniors themsel.ves: the adults. "The desire by seniors to live off 11 years of their past." -Jim Litle "They, didn't have senioritis in my day." -my mother adults juniors had." "It's what we miss and wish they -Mark Adams T didn't intend to include any juniors in this article, but when Thomas Hazel heard what I was doing, he summed up Senioritis aptly: "it's a non-prescription brand of Motrin." If you still don't know what Senioritis is. remember that. because of the quotes, I only had to write half of this article. Thanks, everyone!
