Page Four High Life September 23,1949 Whirlies Meet Wildcats Tonight CavalcadeofSporte By Richard Whittemore Well, Coach Jamieson and Coach Baker have started the Whirlies this season which shows promise of becoming one of their greatest in many years. Their running at tack has not been stifled yet; and of the few passes that they have attempted, a large percentage have been completed for numerous gains. Tiny Burtner is having a wonder ful time this year punting. Central Junior High’s pride and joy, Lloyd “Bo” York, shdw^’signs of filling Bob Watson’s shoes in the extra- point department. Joe Attayek is his old self, a hard, pile driving, bull-dozer. Joe Attayek is at, the left half back and his understudy, Berman Royal, was a defensive stand out against Raleigh. Na than Hale would surely give his life for his team. Skin head Enochs is the other back field man, and he really gives the op ponents something to worry about with his deceptive running. Also, Bob is rated as “top-notch” pass receiver. The other back field men are: Arnold Leary, Bill Campbell, Clinit Leggette, Rodney Harrelson, Bill Luper and Mickey Chamblee. Only one player on the'varsity foot ball team is a stranger to G. H. S. He is Rodney Harrelson who comes to us from Orlando, Fla. For the past two years he has played half back for his high school. Upon his arrival here, he was placed in the full back position behind Tiny Burtner, and he has done fine so far this season. This is not his first year of Greensboro football, as he played half back for Central Junior High a few years ago. The line has done remarkably well; and ithey should, since they have such players as Leon Siler, and Jim Leonard up front. These two are the tackles, and they really; live up to their position’s name. On the left and right flanks are Char lie Phillips and Archie Morris. Behind these two stalwarts are Clarence Taylor and Ken Callendar. Bob “Golden Voice” Murray who could sing any opponent to sleep is the center; and John TTsry, play ing his first year on the varsity, is a capable replacement. At the guard spots are Bob Highfill and Jim Eller. .Toe Kirkman and Bob O’Neal are ready to substitute on the shortest notice. Fate has not placed many in juries on the team this year, though Bill Luper is out for the rest of the season due to the fact that he sustained a broken collar bone in a sand lot football game Sunday before last. We should have a good team next year or year after next, too, be cause many of the line men are sophomore.s. By playing on the varsity this year, they are obtain ing the much-needed experience to keep a good athletic team. Two of these “first year” sophs are Melvin and Self. Remember Jimmy Finison and Charlie Thacker of last year’s team? Well, after much thinking the two have decided to display their talents on the South Carolina gridiron this fall. Yes, this comes as a surprise to all because these boys had been expected to enter the University of Tennessee. Pictared above are Clarence Taylor and Nathan “Sonny" Hale, who, for being annoiuwed as the best line, man and back respectively, are receiving their choice of new shoes at the Robert A. Coach Smith’s most recognized feat was the building up of a strong football team at Gillespie. This team, usually weak, had a very good season under his supervision. Mr. Smith will-be the coach for the ends, and if any of these stal warts receive all-state recognition, the credit will fall upon a man who is performing his first, and we hope, many a year as a coach at Greensboro Senior High School. Habit is a cable, a thread of which we weave each day. Tonight when the ever-ready Greensboro Purple Whirlwinds journey to meet the always strong Central High eleven in their initial tilt of Western Conference play, the Whirlies will be out for revenge because Charlotte, for the past two seasons has ruined the locals hopes for an unbeaten season by edging them out, 13-7 and 6-0. The other conference games this year are as usual with Gastonia, Asheville, Reynolds of Winston- Salem, Salisbury, High Point, and Burlington, intermingled with a non-conference game with a much improved eleven of Reidsville, which defeated High Point earlier in the season. The Whirlies’ last game tentatively is with Mexico City here at the new stadium on the night of November 23. Last year the Wilmington team journeyed to Mexico City and de feated them, and as everyone re members, we edged our Wilming ton this year. So, by virtue of this win, we’ll probably gain the favor ites role. If the Whirlies have a good sea son, they may be invited to play in some bowl games against an other strong team. If we all go out and help cheer the team to victory, they may achieve this aim.
