Twenly-Two Continued from Page One dents of unusual intellectual promise, to help them attend col lege, and to provide means by which corporations, colleges, and other sources of financial aid can help support able and deserving students. hirlie \^^ords Every season has its ups and downs; nights when everything works perfectly and other ones the teams would like to forget. Burlington was ready for the Whirlies in every respect. It must be said that the game was far below Whirlie potential but a complete collection of bad calls was the high light of the game. Two students, one from Grimsley and one from Sen ior, were overhead talking before the game. ‘(We’re gonna win tonight,” braggd the Bulldog. “Really, what makes you so sure?” “It’s simple we’ve got the weight and we’ve got the whistles.” The biggest blow of the Burlington game came in the second half when Darrell James was carried off the field. He will be forced to bench hug for at least a month and maybe longer. The best thing which can be said about the game Friday a few weeks ago is that Brad Root marched very well. Not only did he join the Bulldogs band but also he applied for member ship in Burlington’s “Dancing Boots,” Thursday night the Whirlies faced their second conference foe this season in the form of Winston Salem Gray. This one turned a little better after the Whirlies finishing sloshing around in the mud. Despite the fumbles, the final score was 20-6. The Whirlies meet Lexington with a 1-1 conference record. If they defeat this high flying foe they must defeat the rest of the conference teams scheduled this season to even hope for a tie in the Central 4-A race. Burlington would have to bow to Lexington and High Point to the Whirlies for this to take place. The season for the Whirlies is really just getting started. The loss to Burlington was the first fall at the hands of the Bulldogs since 1960. It was a costly loss but maybe not a fatal one. A couple of nights ago Senior had some visitors. These Orange and Gold villians were a little neater than the red one last year from the trade school across town. The neatly sten ciled black charcoal letters are quite impressive on the front walk. Ironically they seem to match others painted on some bridges around Greensboro two years ago. Burlingtons art department is apparently far superior to Pages; at least in the art of lettering. Then Travel To Lexington For Deciding Game^ofiSeason The Whirlies face a supreme test tonight when they visit the hive of the powerful Lexington Yellow Jackets. Only once this year has the Lexington grid machine been stopped. Thomasville turned the trick a month ago as the Bulldogs edged the Jackets 27-20 in a hotly contested game, not over until the final second. Lexington lists as its victims, Salisbury (28-14), High Point (13-0), Albemarle (21-0), and Asheboro (18-6). Coble Sporting Goods 119 NORTH GREENE Phone BR 2-0912 Junior Whirlies Down Smith, Lose To Burllngfon The Junior Varsity football team, coached by John Hickey, Dave Murr, and Ken Umberg, and a backbone to future Whirlie suc cesses, has a satisfactory 2-1-1 record over the first four games, the only loss came to- the hated Bullpups of Burlington by a 12-0 margin. Smith’s youthful yearlings help ed the baby Whirlies open the sea son. The game wasn’t much of a contest, with the Eagles falling 19-0. Dean Brewer, George Stan, ton, and Steve Haithcock each tallied once in promoting the easy win. Burlington was next and as said before, defeated the Blue in a game marred by numerous penal ties. In all, 270 yards were called against the teams, with Greens boro holding an impressive 235-35 edge. (Yes, the game was played in Burlington). Following Burlington, the Baby Bison from cross-county came to visit. The game ended in a score less deadlock as neither team failed to take advantage of their opportunities. Last Thursday afternoon, Octo ber 8, the JV’s surprised a heavily favored Black' Demon crew of Winston-Salem Reynolds, and whirled to a 13-7 triumph. Coming up later this year is the annual clash with the young Bucs from Page. The Whirlies hopes to avenge the 6-6 tie of a year ago. The Pirates are tough, so they say, but most viewers feel that the Westover Terrace School should pull through. At any rate, it should be a fine game and de serves a large crowd. LADYBUG SUE BRETT .... CENTURY BURLINGTON BAGS BRIEF MANOR PLUS MANY OTHERS! A highlight of the season came in the opener when Lexington surprised powerful Winston-Salem Reynolds 25-6. It can be noted that the Black Demons from Win ston were the pre-season choice for conference laurels, but the Yellow Jackets quickly made it known to all, that they too, were to be reckoned with. The Whirlies also have been enjoying a productive season, with the only loss coming to the sur prising, but tough band of Bur lington Bulldogs. Grimsley swept Raleigh (10-0), East Forsyth (27-7), and Fayetteville (7-6) off the field before running into the Dogs. However, the Blue and White rebounded admidst numer ous fumbles and extreme damp ness to sneak past Winston-Salem Gray 20-6. The Hounds threw a single wing offense at the Whirlies and succeeded to puzzle the Big Blue for the game’s early mo ments. Tonight’s contest with Lexing ton promises to develop into an offensive versus a defensive strug gle. Lexington has rolled up 125 points so far this fall, while Greensboro has yielded only 25. (At press time, the Whirlies have the best defensive record for all 4-A schools in the state). The team which capitalizes on the most breaks will undoubtedly become the winner. Pres Mull, Lexington coach, has four top backs that might bear watching. If Gary Cope, fullback Dan Spears, quarterbacks Chris Ripple, and Ken Yearick can be stopped by the strong Whirlie for ward v^ill, Greensboro should come back home with their sel- ond straight conference win and fifth overall.
