Page Six High Life April 26, 1965 Whirlies Defeat WS Gray Trail Hounds by One-Half Game The 1965 Whirlies defeated the Red Pirates from cross town Page by a score of 7-1. This was the second season victory for the Whirlies who have lost only one game thus far. David James, first baseman, 4 ajeW VeQ/A/S ^ l//CTOR^ IS (aJ/eEI/I/ OIXR- dKASV. The Whirlies’ other win was obtained from Salisbury on their home diamond. The rain has caused the can cellation of the other baseball games during the first two weeks of the season. High Point, how ever, has already shown prospects of becoming a major 4-A confer ence threat. Last year High Point handed Cheek his only loss in regular season play as an error scored a Bison despite the fact Cheek pitched a no-hitter. The Whirlies have plenty of power and a lot of potential. Don Hartig and Max Wilson have prov ed they can fire the ball over and get the strike outs when the going gets rough. The Whirlies need to learn to work better as a team, but they are good and as times goes on, they will undoubt edly grow better. The worry over pitchers has been eased and on the whole they are hitting fine. The Blue and White conquered Burlington by a score of 10-3. Larry Dempsey, Delane Hooks, and Mike Locklar led the offen sive drive. Max Wilson pitched a good game limiting the Bull dogs to seven hits. This win in creases the Whirlie record to 3-1. The Blue and White were sched uled to play Lexington, but were plagued by rain and had to post pone the game. The Whirlies hope the rain is over, at least as far as baseball is concerned. An important victory was scor ed when the Whirlies conquered Winston-Salem Gray 10-4. Gray was unbeaten until the Whirlies took them on and showed every one what to expect in the future games. Robert Lucas pitched a fine game to win his second in as many starts. David James, Max Wilson, Mike Locklar, and Bea ver Peer were the leaders in the offensive drive. The Whirlies moved to within one-half game of first place with this win. The WTiirlies most recent win was a 5-2 victory over the Salis bury Yellow Jackets. Don Hartig pitched a fine game striking out 12 Yellow Jackets. Larry Demp sey, David James, and Mike Lock lar were the main hitters with Larry Dempsey smashing a home run. This victory puts the Whir lies closer to the first place Gray Hounds. AH four of the spring athletic teams have gotten off to a fine start. Currently the baseball team is only a half game out of first place. The main reason for the recent success is because of im proved hitting to go long with the already steady pitching. Larry Dempsey’s bat was a lethal weapon in downing Salisbury in the last game. He smacked a homer and a double to lead the offensive attack. Continued good hitting and good steady pitching by Don Hartig, Max Wilson, and Robert Lucas could lead the Whirlies to another state 4 A baseball championship. Congratulations to Tom Roos for his recent fine showing in the Duke-Durham relays. He placed third in the shot put. Three relay teams placed fifth which shows that the Whirlie track team will stand a good chance of placing high in the state meet if they don’t win it. The golf team is off and soaring to another state golf cham pionship by easily winning their first matches. Excellent play by the experienced linksmen shows that the team has an ex cellent chance of winning their third straight state golf title. Charles Snipes could well be the top high school golfer in the state. The tennis team’s early season 4-2 record may indicate an improvement over last year’s dismal season. Juniors David Thompson and Julius Dees have added strength to the team made up mostly of seniors. Attendance has not been up to par for the spring athletic events. Everyone should come out and see the hotly contested sport events and cheer their Whirlies on to victory. The success of the season for the teams will be determined by the state meets to be held in May. MR.
