April 26, 1965 High Life Page Seven Tennis Team Wins 4 of 6 In Early Season Matches Grimsley’s tennis team, long a conference push-over, looks as if they might snap out of their usual doldrums, as the netters have compiled an over all 4-2 record in their first three weeks of play. Probably the most exciting match so far has been with the Black Bison from near-by High Point. Go-ing into the final double match, the score stood tied at 4-4. However, Farlow and Wilkins teamed up to take a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory over their opponents. A look around the conference finds that Winston-Salem Reyn olds, Burlington’s unpopular Bull- pups, and the Pirates of Page as chief challengers to the confer ence title. Page proved its po tential against the Whirlies, while Grimsley has yet to test the pow erful Black Demons or Burling ton. Lexington is tough, but it can be said that in the Whirlie- Yellow Jacket match, Lexington won 5 matches in th»ree games each. Normally 2 games are need ed to win. As for Gray, Salisbury, and High Point, they are possibly a year or two away from success. Come May 14-15, the tennis state meet will be held in Chapel Hill. Though Grimsley probably won’t cop the title, it can be said that the powers will have to scrap to come out a winner over GHS’s Blue and White. At any rate, it should be an interesting two days! \(^hirlie Golfers Clobber Foes In Opening Conference Play Grimsley’s golf team stretched its 1965 season record to 4-0, by defeating aU conference foes at a match in Salisbury last Thursday, April 14 , The Whirlies, under Coach Bob Jamieson, shot a highly impressive 293 to edge past Win- ston-Saem Reynolds which posted a 303. Other scores were Burlington 315, Salisbury 317. Lex ington 323, Page 324, High Point 332, and Gray 343. The Whirlies, under Coach Bob Whirlies Finish High In Duke Durham Relays The WhirUe trackmen did well in the recent Duke-Durham relays. Thirty six teams from North Caroina and Virginia par ticipated in the meet. Wins have come over Smith (9-0), Gray High of Winston- Salem (9-10), High Point (5-4), and Salisbury (7-2). Lexington handed GHS its first loss (6-3) in a match that could have easily gone either way. Page was the only team to handily beat the lo cals—doing this by an 8-1 margin. Boys such as Wayne Farlow, Jnuny Wilkins, Rick Cory, and David Thompson seem to be hav ing everything very much under control, as they have looked im pressive in their recent outings. Junior Julius Dees, has surprised everyone, including Coach Bonda- nella. His quick aggressiveness and accurate shots have made him on all occasions tough to handle. Others contributing to the present WhirHe success include Ferris, Thomas, and Radcliff. RAMAR classic. • • the Henley shirt in solids and Spring patterns All-time favorite for all I casual occasions. Oth er golfers from Grimsley were Joe Inman 74, Buzz Sawyer 74, Mike Schleuter 75, and David Williams 75. These senior boys led Grimsley to state titles in both their sophomore and junior years. In earlier matches played, the Whirlies totaled an overall ag gregate of 282 at Lexington to again defeat runner-up Reynolds which totaled 292. Charles Snipes shot an unheard-of 66 for top honors. Inman fired a 69 for second place. At Burlington, GHS had a real battle going before succumbing second place Williams High School. The Greensboro team scored 310 to 312 for the Bullpups. Snipes again led scor ing with a 73. In the first match of the season Grimsley again proved victorious, scoring a 301 to again edge the Winston Black Demons who post ed a 303. Again, as usual, Snipes led all with a 69. Championship hopes, both state and conference, are again highly probable this year. Since a third state championship is practically imminent, it will make this a rec ord for number of wins posted by one high school in succession. Clinton Cheshire of the Inter act was the high scorer for his team. Hi-Y member Paul Austin proved himself by getting the most points for his team. When both the teams went into the game, they were standing on almost equal ground from the standpoint of the number of games won and lost. Hi-Y had a fine record by not having lost any games until the match for the championship. On the other hand, the Interact was close behind, having lost ony two. A four team playoff was needed in order to establish the teams which would play in the finals. In the first game, the Interact Club played the Key Club and came away with victorious re sults. The second game played was held between the Hi-Y and the Key Club in which the Hi-Y won. This brought the Hi-Y into the finals. A fine display of sportsmanship was shown throughout the game. The Interact club players may take pride in their accomplish ment for a game well played and enjoyed by both teams.
