Grimsley beat South Stokes twice, Dudley twice, one loss and a win to Parkland, Andrews twice, and West Forsyth twice. The team played a total of ten matches leaving their Con ference record at 9-1 and their overall record at 11-2. On Tuesday 17th and Wednes day 18th, the tournament will be held at Parkland for all the teams in our conference. Parkland won a coin toss, between Parkland and Grimsley, that determined where the tournament was to be held. The tournament will deter mine, by single elimination, which team will proceed to the State play-offs. Grimsley will not play on Tuesday, our first match will be on Wednesday. “Our chances of winning the tourna ment are very good,” said coach Addison, “Our only real competi tion will be against Parkland. Right now Parkland and us are tied for first. All of our girls are peaking out and that makes our chances even better at the begin ning of the season. I feel we have a strong team, with seniors like Andrea Bryant, captein Denise Ford, Angela Polk and Liz Stiles. At first we were lacking good set ters but Cindy Shepherd and Tina Leonard, both juniors, really came through for us. Sophomore Mary Anna Arthur was our back up setter.” In order to go to the State play offs the volleyball team must win the tournament. In the State play offs there are 3 rounds, plus the finals when four teams meet at a designated site and play. Debbie Southern is the team’s scorekeeper, and Amy Lee is the trainer. “Amy has been to every game and practice we have had, “says Addison, “She deserves some credit.” Cross Country goes 47-0 over eight years by Paris Davis The Boys Cross Country team experienced there 47th win with no losses at High Point Andrews October 10. The team has not lost since 1977. Andy Reed was the team leader, followed closely by Paul Bates, John Leone, Derrick Leonard, and Pat Goodwin. All '’ive runners have been con sistently strong through out the season. The girls scored a victory against Eden Morehead in a dual meet October 9. Stacey Watkins came in first with a commanding lead followed by Maureen; Musgrove. When talking with Coach Smith, he commented on how well the team has done this season. “The team has ex perienced great success on tne first month of the season. As of October 10, 1984 the boys were undefeated and unscored upon in the conference.” The Whirlies have been undefeated. Coach Smith mentioned how well runners Andy Reed, Paul Bates, John Leone, Derrick Leonard, Pat Goodwin, Bennie Carver and John Strassed have contributed to the team. He also said that the team has done very well in the three large Saturday invitationals in which they have participated in. According to Smith the girls team has done well also. They began their season with a defeat of Page and remained undefeated by outscoring Eden-Morehead. Smith made statements that the girls have shown themselves to be one of the better teams in the state. He confirmed that Jennifer Poole, Stacey Watkins and Maureen Musgrove have con- sistantly led the team with help from Susan Rutishauser, Andria Platy, Alison Shale, and Stephanie Hoback. This long run of success has brought the Grimsley Cross Country team attention and popularity which seemed a long time coming. It has made them one of the best cross country teams in the state. However, the Whirlies gain ed hope as Mike Woodell scored the winning goal, with the assist of Steve Mann. The game ended in a Whirlie victory with the score 1-0. This win improved the team’s record to 9 and 3. After this vic tory Grimsley moved into first place in its conference. The Whirlies’ offense was led by Senior Larry Reece, Junior Mike Woodell, and Sophomore Marcelo Diodati. The defense was led by goalie. Josh Prago, who had an outstanding game by not allowing Andrews to score. Prago, letting only 9 goals go by this season, has been the key to the Whirlie defense. The young Whirlie team, con sisting maily of sophomores and juniors, has given many strong efforts by taking 357 shots at goal. However, only 55 of these shots have been scored on opposing teams. Reece and Diodati have been the high scorers on the team. Reece has scored 15 goals out of 69 shots. Diodati has scored 8 goals out of 61 shots. Mike Woodell and Ken Jones have also been helpful to the Whirlies in scoring many goals. At the beginning of the season, Herk DeGraw, head coach for the Whirlies, had hoped the team would have a strong season. As they have proceeded, the team has proven this to be true. They hope to continue their strong season as they enter the state playoffs in November. Maureen Musgrove working hard during morning practice. SPORTS & HOBBIES DNUMITED, INC.
