Soccer Team advanced to State semi-finals
by Chris Sieredski
After making it to the
semi-finals of the state
tournament, Grimsley’s
soccer team was defeated
by Raleigh Sanderson
High 6 to 0 in a game
played November 13 in
Raleigh. The Whirlies had
advanced to the semi
finals by defeating the
defending state cham
pions, Chapel Hill, and
Apex High School.
“This has been the only
team to go this far in the
state tournament since
I’ve been coaching,’’ says
Herk Degraw, head coach
for the Whirlies. The team
began its attempt at the
state championship by
defeating Chapel Hill 1 to
0. Unable to score in the
first half against Chapel
Hill, the Whirlies came out
strong in the second half to
break through Chapel
Hill’s defense. On an assist
from Mike Woodell, junior
Steve Mann scored the
Whirlies only goal in the
game. After defeating
Chapel Hill, Grimsley
went on to defeat Apex
High School, 6 to 1. This
victory carried them into
the semi-finals of the state
tournament.
Spirits were high and
Grimsley students were
supporting their team hop
ing they would advance to
the finals by defeating
their next opponent
Raleigh Sanderson.
However, their hopes were
shattered as Raleigh
defeated Grimsley. The
Whirlies played a hard
fought game but their ef
forts became hopeless as
Sanderson continued to
score. Although Grimsley
did not make it to the
finals the team had a winn-
ing seson and an
undefeated record in the
conference. Senior Larry
Reece agrees that the
team had a good season
but according to Reece it
was “a bad way to end a
good season.’’

After the loss of quarter
back Brian Gay the
Whirlies looked to fullback
Harry Parrish to lead the
offense. Parrish,
Grimsley’s leading
rusher, ran for 304 yards in
the last four games of the
season. He averaged 5.4
yards a carry in the last
four games and scored 6 of

Grimsley’s head football
coach Jeff Smouse has
recently completed his
first season with the
Whirlies. Smouse’s ap

was highly publicized and
many people had greater
expectations for his team
than the 6 and 4 record
they posted. However he
did bring new life to the
Whirlie football program.
