Page 4 QUEENS BLUES March 4, 1939 STUDENTS GIVE RECITAL A student recital was given in the auditorium Friday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock by the pupils of Mrs. Elsie Stokes Moseley and Miss Grace Rob inson. The program was as follows: Piano —A Wayside Fire, a descriptive tone poem played hy Jane Booney; Pomponette—Durand, a dainty dance of old France played by Ruth Mc Cord. Voice—Elf and Fairy—Pensmore, Elizabeth Taylor; Lullaby—Brahms, Margaret Hardin. Piano—Arabesque by Debussy, in modern French manner describes the Spanish Moorish style of decoration characterized by foliage elaborately interwined, played by Maujer Mose ley. Organ—Canyon Walls—Clokely. Another descriptive tone poem for the organ from the suite “Mountain Sketches” realistically describing the stark sheer walls of a canyon, played by Claire Wishart. Voice—When Love Is Kind — An Old English Melody, Josephine John son; Kashmire Song — Wbodford- Finden, Mary Payne. Piano — Menuett Reverchon by Weisemann, in the old classic man ner played by Mary Florence Shelley; Neapolitan Song by Bellini, a gay dance of Naples with a thread of Starts Monday, March 6 JAMES STEWART CAROLE LOMBARD —in— "Made For Each Other" Starts Friday, March 11 NELSON EDDY —in— "Let Freedom Ring” SPEAKER COMING HERE Much interest is being shown in the address sponsored by the local Academy chapter of the Sphinx so ciety of Sigma Mu to be given here Thursday evening, March 16, by Dr. 1. G. Greer according to Sue Mauldin, member of the scholarship fraternity. Dr. Greer, who is head of the Bap tist Orphanage in Thomasville, will talk on North Carolina ballads and folk songs. He has studied on this subject for years and is reported to be quite an authority. Dr. Greer will illustrate his talks by singing some of the ballads and folk songs accompani ed on the piano by his wife. Another feature of the program will be Dr. Greer’s dulcimer which he will play while singing. This is an old musical instrument having wire strings and played with two light hammers. About two months ago. Dr. Greer spoke to the Charlotte Music Club and on this trip all towns people and students are invited by Sigma Mu to hear him again. The address will be gin at 7:30 in the auditorium and will be broadcast over WBT from 7:45 to 8:00 that evening. melancholy song, played by Dorothy Robinson. Kappa Delta Alpha Ornicron chapter of Kappa Delta will hold its initiation services on March 18, in the Day Student Building, in connection with the rally being sponsored hy the alumnae with the local chapter. Tonight they will have the second degree at the house on Sorority Row at 8 o’clock, after which the chapter will entertain at an informal party at the Sharon Golf Club. Pledges to be given the second de gree include Tiny Waddill, Nell Abbott, Hope Patterson, Harriett Scoggin, Julia White, Olivia Gillespie, Margaret Harden, Marguerite Gam- brell, Rita Clary, Elizabeth Taylor, Mary Lou Wright, and Katherine Curran. Phi M.u Gamma Gamma chapter of Phi Mu will initiate nine girls this afternoon at 5 o’clock at the house on Sorority Row, to be followed by a banquet at 7 o’clock at the Hotel Charlotte. Mil dred Thomas will be toastmistress, and the colors of the sorority, rose and white, will be used in the decora tions. Those to be initiated include Mar garet Erwin, Helen Westerfield, Julia Edwards, Carolina Edwards, Mildred Lowrance, Helen Cox, Ruth Mc Farland, Lib Sommerville, and Jane Rankin; Dorothy Duckett, who was initiated last week, will share in the honors. On Thursday evening, February 23, members of the faculty held the first of a series of group meetings to dis cuss current problems in American higher education. Dr. Agnes Stout, Miss Sara Nooe, and Miss Anne Vann led a panel dis cussion of the recently published book, “Future of the Liberal College,” by Norman Foerster. It deals with the future of the smaller colleges. Officers of the chapter are Alene Ward, president; Dorothy Alexander, vice-president; Elizabeth Imbody, secretary; and Elizabeth Harms, treasurer.
