Page Four THE EARLY BIRD November, 1955 November, Fall Highlights Greetings, Old Friends: Wel come, New Friends! Again we are bringing to you our log of events and happenings at Orange Street] School. On September 6 we opened with the largest enrollment ever, after] a pleasant summer holiday. We were overjoyed to have four new members join our faculty in per sons of Mrs. Revelle, as Music] Supervisor, Miss Cynthia Harris, a grammar grade teacher. Miss Whelma Hicks, a primary teacher, and Miss Lucille Fields, a gram mar grade teacher. You will read more about them in this issue. From the beginning, our curri culum has been enriched by two] educational movies presented to the student body. The pupils were held spellbound | on September 28, by Chan Loo the magician. The pupils readily] admitted that he was so proficient with his magic that they could not figure him out at all. Our school patrol made our hearts swell with pride in the an nual Jubilee, held in Oxford. They | were further enhanced by the completeness of their uniforms | and their perfect synchronization of steps as they marched down Main Street. The pupils and faculty members were delighted to have Mrs. Ruth Lawrence Woodson, State Super visor, visit us during the week of October 4. We are always happy to have Mrs. Woodson visit and share with us her experiences Our hats are off to Mrs. B. P. Tyler and IMrs. C. S. Stegall. Mrs. Tyler received her M. A. from New York University while Mrs. Stegall received her M. A. from Columbia University. Orange Street is proud of the part it played in the success of the Boy Scout Drive. Our own principal, Mr. J. H. Lucas, served as cliairman of the entire Negro division. Granville County proved its capability at the Kick-Off din ner held in the Orange Street cafe teria, which was well attended. Through the courtesy of the Eastern Air Line Co. headed by our superintendent, Mr. C. W. Duggins, the principals, teachers and their husbands were given a rare treat. An airplane ride, covering Durham, Chapel Fbll, Raleigh and other nearby cities. Everyone appreciated and enjoyed this great occasion, because it was the first experience of its kind for some of them. Our school was again honored by the department of Health Edu-' cation at the University of North Carolina by its selection as one of the representative schools to be observed. This group spent Octo ber 12 viewing our instruction and | school plant. The Orange Street family wishes to thank the Board of Education] for the renovation and interior] paint job which was done through out our school while we were a- way. A few weeks ago a work table with over hanging pot holders and a 40 qt. pressure cooker were add ed to the other fine equipment in our lunchroom. This makes every thing convenient and ultra mod ern. Parthenia Daye, Reporter Music News How To Make Orange Street School The Best This is the way to make Orange Street School best. Make it better than all the rest. Do the things you should each day And cooperate in every way. When you walk through the halls to lunch, Don’t give the children you meet a punch. Keep your voices soft and low, Don't walk too fast, nor yet, too slow. Keep the lavatories spick and span Put paper and trash in the waste can. Don’t put writing on the newly painted walls. That isn’t beautiful at all. On the stairway keep to the right. Don’t run when you see a friend in sight. Just keep moving but not too fast. Don’t be the first and don’t be the last. If you do right, you will pass the test. And you will surely make Orange Street School the best!!
