T7T PENL.AND LINE down in a snow drift near Tuscaloosa, but neither was harmed. All the motels were full, but stranded travelers were made welcome at the University Mall Shopping Center where 200 people huddled together. They really appreciated the hot tea and coffee which a cafeteria owner served them. 'The hardest part was getting any kind of information," said Ed, who spent the next night 50 miles up the road in Birmingham. He finally made it to Penland on Tuesday, six days after he left Texas. Two feet of snow is not much of an occasion in Minnesota where Kevin Kolledi boarded a bus en route to Penland. He was stuck in Cincinnati for two nights in a Budget Host motel. He did manage to visit a museum and see a little bit of the city, but spent most of his time in the station, hoping to catch a bus. He finally made it to Knoxville, only to go through a repeat of the experience in Ohio: another hotel, another day of waiting in the station. He left on Saturday and also finally made it by Tuesday. HeaUier Richard and her parents decided to make a pleasant family trip out of her journey to Penland and started off well before the blizzard, only to be trapped at hotel in Harrisburg for three days. Pat Ncvin got as far as the post office and decided to bunk in with True Kelly who lives neaihy, while several other students stayed at a motel in Spruce Pine. There was no appreciable damage to the school. When the dire forecasts began to dominate the airwaves, staff turned off the water in all buildings which might lose heat in the event of a power outage and took other needed precautions. Trees were felled by hurricane force winds in all parts of the storm's path, but only one fell at Penland, doing no harm. The session was extended by several days to make up for the lost time. Except for the expected spring rains, the weather has been beautiful ever since the storm.
