Mastodons began to exist in th« Miocene age and became extinct in the Pleistocene ag'*. They were scattered all over the globe, and more than 30 species have been dis tinguished by paleontologists. It is probable that several species lived in North America, but the one best known and commonly in mind when the term is used, is Mastodon Americanos. 1’his species seems tc have ranged all over the I’nited States and southern Canada, and t ■ have been runner for its teeth *Th1 bones, in a more or less perfect condition, are repeatedly f »uml. A dozen or more mounted skeletons are on exhibition m mu t’areful comparison and study of these slew that the mastodon must have l ad tlu general form and ap pearance of a modern elephant, with a somewhat heavier hotly and Hatter forehead than that of the mammoth or Indian elephant, nor did il> heigl t exceed theirs on the. average if anything it was less, owing to flu* shortnc-'s of the legs. The links, too, were of similar length and they had a characteris tic' tendency to curl upward, in much the same way as the living •elephant's. MARVS SKIRT Wary had a iiti t skirt That reached just to her knee— Cut then what interest could that have For chaps like you and me? CHURCH BELLS AND RELIGION Tht* association of bells with re- | ligion goes back to ‘>he remotest j ages, and we tind them mentioned in the history of the ancient Jews, | of the <! reeks and Romans, and of the Egyptians and Assyrians, while it hey have also a prominent part to <day in most of the creeds of the East. In the Christian faith we first find records of bells being used ■ when persecutions ceased and ?erv- ! ices began to be held openly. In j ages when clocks and watches were ; unknown, church bells serve* a very real purpose in calling emigre gat ion, not necessarily to church, but to prayer. GOOD REASON Oscar—Why do you always buy your clothes on the installment plan ? Oswald—They try to give me stuff that will lust until the install ments are paid.—Princeton Tiger. BLACK DIAMONDS “You wouldn’t marry a man be came of his title?” “I might,” answered Miss Cayenne, “if it really meant something. For iuatance, I wouldn’t have anv posi tive objection to a coal baron.” OH, THI MANNERS! Brown (getting on at way sta tion—to friend)—Hallo, John! Traveling alone? Friend—Xo, indeed. Wife’s in the smoking car. Sit down. TERRORS OF TROPICAL SEAS Bather* In Danger From Shark*, Sting Ray*, Octopl and Other Ocean Pect*. Tropical seas are full of terrors for the bather. There are not only sharks, but also sting rays, electric rays aud swordfish, as well as the octopus. Sharks, of course, are l»v far the worst of all sea pests and all warm seas are full of them. Oddly enough, on the Atlantic coast of Florida bathing is safe, but on th«- Gulf coast it is madness to enter deep water. The gulf is haunted by the so called tiger shark, as savage and voraeiou.- i brute as exists, though not by any means oi:e of the largest of its kind. Of the really large sharks—and some grow to a tremendous size the majority ar** perfectly harmless. One of tin* largest is the basking shark, i hie of these sharks killed oir the Isle of Wight was VS feet long and weighed about six tons. The only dangerous individual among the giant sharks is the Car churoduu rondoleti, a monster 40 feet in length, which is provided with the most terrible teeth and can swallow a man at a gulp. Luckily it is very rare. AURORA BOREALIS PERIODIC Fine»t Diplay* of Northern Light* Arc at Intervals of Si:cty Years. The name “aurora borealis” wa.« first used by (.’n>^’ 1 i, \vii<*. in ln'-l. observed one in France ami wrote a description of it. Tli •‘aurora'' is periodic in its manifestations, the finest displays being at i; : . f CO years, and less marked ones :u intervals of ten or eleven years. It is asserted that the greater ami lesser displays correspond with the increase and decrease of spots on the sun. This phenomenon is generally manifested in the following way : A dim light appears on the horizon shortly after twilight and gradually a-sunies the shape of an uivli hav ing a pale yellow color. Fn*m this arch streams of light shoot forth, passing from yellow to green and then to brilliant violet. The name aurora borealis, wh’b generally referring to the northern lights, also is applied to a similar phenomenon visible in the vicinity of the south pole. GOLF A FIERCE GAME A Scottish footballer was as bald as a billiard ball, but managed to keep his baldness concealed by means of a cap and wij. in one match, however, as one <>f his op ponents took a re<i-hot shot at goal. "Wiggy” gut his hea l in the way of the ball, and the wig and . aj» were knocked otf. When the first player saw the re sult of his shot he seeiued thunder struck for a moment, and then e\ claimed: “Guid heavensf I’ve sca!p<-d n._ muu HIS VIEW What il<» you think of the Great White Way? BAROTSELAND UPSIDE DOVG African Country Wh*r* Wom*n Hunt and Fi*h and M*n Cook and Keep Houm. No country in the world present® customs stranger than Barotseland, in northern Khodesia, Africa. I’u like many wild nations, Barotse land boasts a well-organized gov ernment. In Barotseland there are rigid laws regarding birth of chil dren. Should a woman bear trip lets, two of them must be killed, be cause they are considered bad luck. The women are the hunters and fishers in Barotseland; it is the men who remain at home housekeeping and tending the crops. But when a woman goes home with her catch and her husband cooks the fish, the matron of Barotseland sits down in solitary state and eats her supper without the companionship of her husband. One explanation for this is that the man being strongeY than the woman might not be able to con trol his greediness and in his su perior strength might be tempted to grab the largest and choicest pieces of the food before she had her *har*.
