6_- Morrisville and Preston Progress. Thursday. June 26.1997 Morrisville PTA honors outstanding K-5 teachers BY MARY BETH PHILLIPS Two Morrisville Elementary School teachers received PTA Council Awards at a recognition and awards reception at Cary High School on May 8. Art teacher Richard Beatty and counselor Kristi Smith were recog nized as Outstanding Teacher and Outstanding Counselor of the Year, each for the K-5 level. They were chosen from almost 100 nominees from Wake County schools. Each PTA may choose to make nominations for the awards. Beatty has been at Morrisville since 1991, and this year marked the milestone of 30 years in teaching. But he is not interested in retiring yet. Beatty enjoys the children and strives to make them feel accepted. “The art work is only a by-product or a vehicle to reach educational goals,” Beatty said. He particularly enjoys working with children with behavior problems. He sometimes manages to take students who are not succeeding anywhere else and find a place for them. Although he teaches 36 45-minute classes each week, he makes an effort to get to know each child. Beatty’s philosophy is to make life-long learners out of his students. Each year at the beginning of the year, he has his students make pic tures of themselves doing the thing they love to do most in the world. This project helps the students’ self- concepts to rise because an adult recognizes what is important to them. He knows that as children develop their thoughts visually it becomes easier for them to write. He and a Chamber Corner Chamber donates to Godwin fund The chamber broke with tradition and voted to donate $100 to the Earl Godwin Scholarship Trust Fund. The chamber does not normally make donations of any kind; how ever, it made an exception in donat ing to the scholarship trust fund for the daughter of Sgt. Godwin who was killed on duty. The Morrisville Chamber of Commerce offices will be closed Friday, July 4. Saturday, July 5, at 10 a.m. a Flag Presentation Ceremony will be held at the Morrisville Chamber Office with Congressman David Price and town officials. About 90 chamber members have signed up to attend the Morrisville Day with the Durham Bulls, Friday, July 11. There are no longer tickets available for this event. Business After Hours will be held on Wednesday, July 16 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at 115 Quail Fields Court, sponsored by Four Seasons Florist and Cary Lighting Center. The two businesses are located off Morrisville Parkway near Dillard Paper Co. Tom Roberg, a candidate for Congress, will be the next speaker at the Issues and Eggs Breakfast, to be held Friday, July 18, at Sorrentos in Triangle Factory Shops.. New directors appointed to the board are: Gerry Fiks, of TSM South Business Telephone Systems, David Lindner, of Weeks Lichtin and David Hodgkins, Town Manager, Town of Morrisville. The Chamber nominating com mittee is looking for nominees to serve on the board of directors for three-year terms beginning on Oct. 1. Before coming to Morrisville, Beatty worked at Washington Gifted and Talented Magnet school for 10 years, and prior to that worked in other Wake County public schools and in Burlington and Winston- Salem schools as art teacher and coordinator. He now teaches evening classes at Meredith College in Elementary Art Methods for the Elementary Classroom Teacher, Drawing, Advanced Painting and an interdis ciplinary study of Art and Music two nights a week. He earned his bachelor’s degree in art at East Carolina University in Greenville and his master’s of edu cation at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Ms. Smith began her career at Morrisville in 1994. She came straight out of college, having done a one-year internship at a middle school in New York. Since arriving at Morrisville, she has put many new programs into place. Ms. Smith started the Business Partnership Program with business es in Morrisville and almost single- handedly had 36 classrooms and all of the specialist classes “adopted” by businesses. This effort raised about $7,000 for the school. She also organized “Red Ribbon Week” a drug awareness program in which students wore red ribbons, made a poster on “What’s There To Do Besides Drugs?” and talked Advertise i The Progress and reach all the homes in Morrisville & Preston. Reader angered by commissioner’s remarks Dear Editor, I recently read a newspaper story in which Mark Silver-Smith accused Bruce Newnam for the recent death of Officer Earl Godwin. Silver- Smith claimed that Godwin did not have a seat belt on and Newnam knew that Godwin “never wore a seat belt and broke the speed limits.” Why does this make Newnam responsible? How low will people on our town board go for publicity? I live near this intersection—It is a death trap! Does anyone remember when former Mayor Wade Davis’s father was killed there? How about a stop light or lowering the speed limit or ideally fixing the blind spot at the intersection? Let’s vote these people off our town board. Obviously they don’t care about the people in Morrisville. All they do is bicker and spend money. Where is the “Progress” of Morrisville? Letter to the Editor I saw Earl Godwin in passing at the Triangle Mini Mart. His death is a loss to the police department and our community. Earl Godwin was human and may have made an error. However, he was in route to help our community. He loved his job and sacrificed himself in the line of duty and honor. Something Mark Silver- Smith and the rest of his gang know nothing about. My son, my entire family and myself are going to miss seeing Earl and his partner Grey. I am tired of people being “drug through the mud” and aren't even alive to defend themselves. Maybe, Earl might have pulled Silver-Smith doing something wrong. Is that where his obvious grudge with the police department is coming from? Newnam was in tears when they air lifted Earl to Duke. Mark Silversmith—did you see the flow ers, Dr. Pepper and cigarettes that Newnam placed at the crash site? Newnam knew, respected and is grieving just as the family is over Earl. Do you know the citizens of Morrisville that well? Grow up! You and “Boss Hogg” (Billy Sauls) are no longer bullies on the playground. Stop fighting! Make something good out of this tragedy—fix the intersection! Is it going to take a lawsuit on the town when someone dies again? That’s the only way anything gets fixed in our fair town. Look at how many people got killed at our railroad crossings before somebody wised up. Say you are sorry Silver-Smith. Enough is enough!
