SMITHFIELD HIGH TIMES CLUB REPORTS In the Hobby Club, Miss Langford started the ball rolling by telling the boys in her club about some interesting snd inexpensive hobbies and club day was under way, Danny Talton was in charge of the latter part of the program and he showed the club members some interesting drawings. The third meeting was spent ^th the boys working on their hobbies. The Girls’ Glee Club elected Ann Stallings to serve as their president, Dessie Bell Holland was chosen to preside in Ann’s absence and perform the other duties of vice-president. This year, secretary-treasurer was divided into two different offices and Jo Ann Edwards was Selected secretary and Beth Boyette was chosen as Treasurer, The members decided that they wanted Norma Kistler to be the publicity chairman and Katherine Lee her Assistant. In the Boys’ Glee Club, the follow ing slate was elected; President-Harvey Ennis, Vice-president - Sherwood Creech, Secretary-Treasurer - Dennis Penny, Pub licity Chairman- Jack Broadhurst, The Glee Clubs are now working on the music for the Christmas program to be presented in Decffiiber, Another music club, the Band Club, Under the guidance of Mr, Rogers elected Eoy Land, president; Mike Starling, vice- president; Emma Jones, secretary-treasurer and Melzer Morgan, reporter. On the second ’Meeting of the club the Dance Band pract iced and Stevie Mackler, Freddie Parrish, und Jarmon Eason played a trio for the club members. The aim of the Band Club ihis year is to improve the appreciation of classical and modern music of the club oiembers, Mrs. Glenn’s Creative ^friting Class ^ote cheers and yells for the second Qieeting, Gail Ogburn, and Ann Mallard ^ere awarded first prize for their excell ent effort and Jack Broadhurst was 9.warded second. During the third meeting ^s, Glenn read a poem titled ’’Autumn" to ihe class and then they wrote poems simi lar to the one she had read. Also the mem bers discussed the short story and worked on short stories of their own to enter in u contest. Delores Puckett stepped into the shoes of president of the Hone Ec. Club when Brenda Dunn moved and Kay Pippin filled the spot of vice-president which was held by Delores, The girls have been wprking on Southern Belles which are made from milk filters trimmed with various colors of yarn. They plan to complete the dolls at the next meeting, Wayne Hildebrand was in charge of the program for the second meeting of the club under Mr, Benton's direction, Wayne conducted two esperiments involving diff erent types of voltage and Norman Under wood conducted one concerning the changing colors of a solution when another solution is added to it. The business part of the meeting was then presented during which a vote was taken to determine a name for the club. In the next meeting, after a lengthy discussion and much debating, the name Science Anonymous was chosen. The members of the Journalism Club were greatly surprised when the program chairman, Ann Booker announced that they were going to give impromptu speeches. The members enjoyed listening to their fellow classmates' efforts, Nancy Pitchi’s "Banana Peelings", Doris Jones’ "Baby Sit ting Ordeal", and George Paddison’s "Camp ing Days" were just a few of the speeches. The third meeting was spent discussing the past issue of the High Times. Barbara Parrish and Miss Wayne assigned articles to the members for the Thanksgiving High Times, Norma Kistler reports that during the second meeting of the Commercial Club, Dessie Belle Holland gave a very interest ing and informative program on a good secretary. Also art typing was presented. The program for the third meeting was given by Gail Stancil and Jo Ann Whitley, The program presented the ratings of high school graduates as good employees. Miss Talley then discussed how to apply for an interview and the remainder of the period was spent planning future programs, Mr, Markham gave some valuable inform ation to the boys in club about when, where, and how to hunt. In the next meeting David Lee, Robin King, and Rex Starling demon strated to the members how to clean, aim, use, and care for a rifle. The boys then enjoyed glancing throiigh Wildlife maga zines looking especially for pictures of
