Holliday Responds to Johnson’s Comments Iredell-Statesville School officials are excited by Iredell County Commission Chairman Steve Johnson’s open invitation to work out school needs and are ready to meet at any time to develop a plan,” said Superintendent Terry Holliday. Responding to comments by Mr. Johnson at Tuesday’s Commission meeting, Dr. Holliday said he now has a clearer understanding of the commissioners’ position. “We’ve always gone by county numbers in figuring possible ways to fund school needs,” Dr. SIHS Marksmanship Team Placed Third Overall South Iredell High School’s marksmanshp team members were, from left, Winston Beasley, Nicole Northern, Bradley Heath, Jason McCoy (kneeling) and Jonathan Stephenson. South Iredell High School’s marks manship team recently placed third overall in the Regional Finals of the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), North Carolina Air Rifle Championships held in Lexington. The local competitors were all members of the Marine Corps JROTC ..The competition includes a total of I .■■"’TT 60 shots from standing, kneeling and prone positions from 10 meters away. The target bullseye is the size of a pencil tip. Top shooter from the match was South Iredell’s Winston Beasley with a score of 511/600. Nicole Northern placed just out of the medal round in fourth position. Holliday said. “The 5% projected sales tax revenues we used came from the county. If their current numbers say 2% is a more accurate number, we’re ready to sit down together and run the numbers to see how this affects the plan. “We’ve been pretty clear about what the school needs really are,” he said. “If the county commis sioners’ parameters include no tax increase, if they include balanced principal instead of balanced pay ments, the plan can be adjusted. I’m sure that, working together, the schools and the commissioners can develop a plan that is in the best interest of the entire county.” Referring to Mr. Johnson’s con Yard Sale, Bake Sale and Silent Auction Set The Statesville Woman’s Club is sponsoring a County Wide Yard Sale, Bake Sale and Silent Auction Saturday, May 22. Doors open at 1 p.m. cems that part of the funding plan included using maintenance money to pay down the debt on construction, Dr. Holliday noted that part of the plan was based solely on the assumption that new construction would replace old buildings. “Understanding that everyday pre ventative maintenance of a new building costs considerably less than the large repairs required to keep up an old school is just good business management,” he said. “With newer buildings, we will have some maintenance savings that can be used elsewhere.” The only confusion Dr. Holliday expressed was Mr. Johnson’s reit eration that the Local Government Commission would not approve the funding proposal. “Tim Romocki, the LGC’s director of debt management, was reported in Sunday’s Iredell Neighbors as saying that a 15% debt ceiling for counties is “not cut and dried,” Dr. Holliday said. “But again, I know this can be cleared up when we sit down together, perhaps including the LGC in discussions.” In fact, Holliday said it would probably be a good idea for repre sentatives of the Mooresville Graded School District and Mitchell Community College also to be at the table since, as Mr. Johnson said, they will have an interest in some share of the coun ty projects. ’The School Board asked in March to sit down together with the county to develop a plan. Now that Mr. Johnson has opened the door, I hope it leads us all toward a solu tion that benefits Iredell County.” Mitchell Community College Faux Finishing - Tuesdays and Thursdays May 26 - June 10, 6-8 p.m. in Room B7 of the Mitchell Community College Continuing Education Center on W.
