Thursday, December 14, 1944 Proconival Made Ready For Saturday Night BASKETBALL COACHES 'm % > •X ^ Staff Analyst Traces History Of Japanese Naval Strategy By Rodney Waters Japan is one of the few East ern Nations that have recognized the importance of a naval strength. They started to build a real navy so late in the times of modern machines that they are way behind Western Navies. Their navy is not an independent organization, but is a wing of the army. Therefore it does not try to use an original strategy, but is used as a support for land forces, and uses a land strat egy. The Nipponese Navy in other words is defensively minded rather than offensively minded. They use the fleet with as few risks as possible. A very impor tant fact is that the Japanese do «>- not try to win command of the sea, but are satisfied with a lo calized operation. The Japanese waged few wars in ancient times, and up until 1868 they confined their naval ac tivities to piracy and some little coastal shipping. At this time they had no idea as to the im portance of sea power. One proof of this was the ex pedition to Korea under Hideyo- shi, in 1592. The Japanese col lected a large fleet of transports and landed troops in Korea, but a Chinese-Korean fleet under Yi- Sun, who is one of the greatest admirals in history, defeated the few Jap war ships. Homeroom Seeks Addresses Of Alumni As a special project the senior homeroom, under the supervision of Mrs. Helen Macon, has col lected the addresses of the alum ni of C.H.H.S. who are in the service, and have compiled them on a chart for the use of the students and faculty of the high school. It is hoped that many Christmas cards and letters being sent to alumni in camps and overseas will result from this project. The chart, which was made by a committee headed by Jeanne Whitfield, has been posted in halls of the Elementary school base ment. School Repairs Volley Ball Courts The main volley ball court, which until last week was in a deplorable condition, has been leveled off, cleaned, and the boundaries marked off with lime by students Jimmy Blake, Frank Fearrington and Leonard Smith. After weeks of preparation, the long-awaited Proconival will be presented this Saturday night from seven-thirty to eleven in the Tin Can. Weeks of planning and work ing have been spent by the Pro- conian staff members connected with the event in building and assembling the entertainments and side-shows which come from the four corners of the earth. Probably the most awaited fea ture of the carnival though, is the crowning of the King and Queen, an event that will take place sometime after ten o’clock. Students will again go to the polls tomorrow to choose their royal highnesses from the field narrowed to five boys and five girls by last week’s primaries. Other features of the Proconi val will be raffles, penny-pitch ing, and other games of chance. The admission will be fifteen cents for stags and twenty-five cents for couples. Everyone is invited and a large turnout is ex pected. Apologies Many apologies are due to Rodney Waters whose article. My Opinion of the Hitler Ques tion appeared in last week’s issue of this paper and by mis take did not carry a byline. So many people have commented on how much they liked the ar ticle that the editors of this paper believe that it is only fair to give credit where credit is due. There will be more of Waters’ work in future issues. Alumni Notes Ardental Blackwood is home on a nine-day leave from the Navy.
