Holy Father Writes Prayer For Orphans VATICAN CITY — A special prayer to Our Lady to be recited by orphans has been composed by His Holiness Pope Plus XII. The Holy Father composed it at the request of the Somaschi Fa thers, who run schools and orphan ages. The text of the prayer is: V “Hall, O most pure virgin, most powerful queen, whom the human family calls by the most sweet name of mother! We who cannot call upon an earthly mother because we never knew her or lost her sweet and need ed help so soon, we turn to you with the certainty that you will be a mother especially for us. “If it is true that our condition arouses pity, compassion and love in all others, so much more will we arouse them in you, who are the most loving, m6st tender and most compassionate of all pure creatures. “O true mother of all orphans,* j we take refuge in your immacu late heart, certain of finding there all the consolations our desolate hearts seek. We put all our confidence in you, so that your motherly hand may guide us and support us along the diffi cult path of life. “Bless all those who help us and protect us in your name. Reward our benefactors and those who have been chosen to dedicate their lives to us. Above all, always be our mo ther, moulding our hearts, illu minating our minds, tempering our wills, adorning our souls with all the virtues and protecting us from those evil ones who would harm us and would have us lost forever. “Finally, our most beloved mother, our delight and our hope, carry us to Jesus, your own Dear Child, so that, if we may not en joy the happiness of a mother here below, we may be all the more worthy of you in this life and afterwards enjoy your motherly love and your presence for eternity, joined with that of your Divine Son, who with the Father and-the Holy Ghost lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.” Cardinal: Pope Reforms Liturgy, For All To Share Christs Life ASSISI — The Cardinal in charge of the Church’s official worship said the “principal and only reasons” for the many re forms in the liturgy made by His Holiness Pope Pius XII is his de sire that the “faithful live truly the life of Christ.” The head of the Sacred Congre gation of Rites said the Pope’s re forms have not been motivated by the demands of the times, new de sires or tastes, or a desire to return to antiquity. “The motive and cause of every liturgical rule,” he said, "... is whatever serves to unite souls to God.. . .” His Eminence Gaetano Cardinal Cicognani made the point in opening the International Congress of Pastoral Liturgy here. Theme of the Congress was “The Pastoral Liturgical Renewal in the Pontifi cate of Pius XII.” ' The liturgy is the official public worship of the Church — the Mass, the other sacraments and the di vine office. The liturgical move ments in the various countries have been chiefly concerned with focus ing attention on this official pub lic worship and the role of the laity in it. The basic aim of the congress, said Cardinal Cicognani, was to re view the “admirable activities of Pope Pius XII in the field of pas toral liturgy.” He said such a re view was being made in a “spirit of loyalty and reverence which every one of the faithful ought to nourish toward the supreme Shep herd who guides us.” In his address, Cardinal Cicog of Rites, to see in the various litur gy “is precisely that of leading the faithful to- form a very com pact union in the Mystical Body of which Christ is the Head.” He said its' aim is also to lead the faithful “to participate in an equal man ner in the liturgical rites.” It would be a mistake, said the head of the Sacred Congregation ofRites, to see in the various litur gical reforms a nostalgia for an cient formulas, “a kind of roman ticism based on esthetic or mysti cal motives, a sentimentalism for things past.” “No, absolutely no,” said the Cardinal. “The principal and, we might say, the only reason of such reforms and reorderings consists in the ardent desire that the faith ful live truly the life of Christ.” He spoke of two “bold steps” that the Pope has taken to enable the faithful to “take part with more ease in the sacrifice of the altar . . . and [to] exercise their ‘royal priesthood.’ ” “I refer,” said Cardinal Cicog nani, “to the evening Masses and the restored ordo of Holy Week.” He continued: “The evening Masses seemed like a superfluous novelty; but their pastoral character was seen immediately. Experience has since demonstrated how useful they are for those who cannot fulfill the Sunday precept, or can fulfill it only with great difficulty. “So also was the new ordo of Holy Week inspired by pastoral considerations . .. Far from weak ening or disturbing the piety of the faithful, the new ordo has in creased that piety in an admirable manner. Even those who did not seem favorable have had to change their minds in the face of the splendid reality. They them selves have affirmed that the out come has been superior to every expectation. “Again, and I insist once more on this point, the motive of the re form was a deeply anxious pastoral solicitude and not, as some may have thought, a desire — praise worthy in itself, for that matter— to call back ancient ceremonies to new life.” The Vatican official praised the Latin language as a sign of the universality aud unity of the 1 Church. He said the Inability of the faithful to understand the Sa cred Rites in Latin “does not nec essarily demand the substitution of the vernacular.” “The Latin language,” he con tinued, “is not simply a means of communication ... it helps us to understand 2,000 years of civiliza tion and culture.” Latin’s pre cision has served theologians to advantage, he added. “It is true,” he continued, “that our people today do not succeed as in-past centuries in understanding sacred rites in the Latin tongue. But this does not necessarily de mand the substitution of the verna cular, for sacred rites can also be understood by means of a good • translation.” It is erroneous, he said, to insist that the people should read in their missals all that the priest reads at the altar, for the priest has his own part in carrying out liturgical functions and the faithful have theirs. However, he added, the faithful do participate in an equal manner in the Holy Sacrifice. For this rea son their participation and under, standing of the rites should be en couraged “by wise and constant effort.” wowtitM ^JooJlnsurance is Re assurance! M. P.
