Nobel Laureates Declare Press
Misstated Petitions to Pontiff
Sydney — (RNS) — Sir John
Eccles said here recent press re
ports stating that two groups of
Nobel Prize winners had urged
the Pope to reconsider the
Church’s teaching on birth control
were misleading.
Sir John, who is professor of
physiology at the John Curtain
School of Medical Research (Can
berra) and one of the signatories
of one of the letters, told the
Catholi" Weekly here that both
documents were designed to stress
the goal of family planning by re
sponsible parenthood, but made no
reference to the means of regulat
ing both.
THE TEXT of the letter which
Sir John (together with several
Americans, an Argentinian, and
Sir Farlane Burnett, another
Australian) signed and which he
released, follows:
“We, the undersigned Nobel
Laureates, are deeply conscious of
the ii- mense burden of responsi

Your Holiness in acting on the
information and analyses of the
commission you have designated

and women must be to the ethi

emerging consensus about the
goals of family planning, namely,
to assure each new infant the
birthright of a warm welcome in
a loving home with a healthy op

to the thoughtful consideration of

Luci Johnson's Baptism "
Defended by Archbishop
WASHINGTON — Archbishop
Patrick A. O’Boyle of Washington
said here the conditional baptism
of Luci Baines Johnson did not
imply in the officiating priest’s
judgment that her Episcopal bap
tism was invalid.
In a statement issued from the
Washington archdiocesan chancery
office, the prelate expressed con
fidence that the priest, Father
James F. Montgomery, did not
have any intention of reflecting on
Episcopal tenets.
The statement also said that
Father Montgomery decided to
baptize the President’s daughter,
advised her of his decision and she
agreed with it.
Miss Johnson’s baptism was crit
icized by Episcopal Bishop James
A. Pike of California. He called
the ceremony in St. Matthew’s ca
thedral a “direct slap” at Episco
pal baptismal rites administered to
Luci as an infant. Others joined
the criticism, including Dr. Fred
erick A. Schiotz, president of the
American Lutheran Church, Min
neapolis.
THE TEXT of Archbishop
O’Boyle’s statement:
“Father James F. Montgomery,
after maturely considering all the
factors involved in the desire of
Miss Luci B. Johnson to be receiv
ed into the Roman Catholic Church,
decided to baptize her conditional
ly. He advised her of his decision
and she agreed, trusting his judg
evitable world-wide consequences
of your action on it, we wish to
express tc Your Holiness the hope
that any decisions will be the L ait
of most profound and most search
ing studies.”
“To this end we wish to offer
Your Holiness the best of our pro
fessional capacities and endeav
ors.”
ment and guidance.
“Father Montgomery’s decisin
to administer baptism conditions
ly did not imply, in his judgmen
that her baptism in the EpiscoS
Church was invalid.
“I fully accept the validity,
baptism conferred by anyone in,
manner in agreement with theta
ditional Christian teaching, p»
formed in the Episcopal Church#
in any church and I am confide
that Father Montgomery was deco
ly conscientious in coming to h
decision and did not have, nor ha
any intention of reflecting on tit
tenets and practices of the Epia*
pal Church, of which Miss Lud
Johnson has been a good and faith,
ful member since early childhood
“I upheld the right, of course, o(
Father Montgomery to make fra
ly his decision in this matter aft#
conscientiously considering all the
circumstances.”
