VOL. XCIII, No. 6 Raleigh, North Carolina 27608, June 1968 ONE DOLLAR A YEAR Past Masters Confer Master Mason Degree Apex Lodge No. 584 held its An nual past Master’s Night Monday, May 27. In spite of inclement weather, a goodly host of Brothers enjoyed fellowship and visitation with its Past Masters over a most delightful hamburger supper pre^- pared by the junior officers of the lodge. After the lodge was opened by its regular officers, worshipful Brother L. G. Jordan, P.M., PDDGM was invited to the East where he conferred the first sec tion fll the Master Masons degree. Past Masters filled all stations. Worshipful Brother Gerald True- love P.M. conferred the second sec tion of the Master Masons degree. The lecture was given by Brother Eddie Stiles, Master, and the charge by Worshipful Brother James A. Cash P.M. Ste- (Continued on Page Two) Bingham Rounds Out One Hundred Years Beneath the portrait of its hon ored namesake M.'.W.'.Brother Robert Bingham, P.G.M. 1882, ’83, ’84, which portrait was presented by Worshipful Dupree Smith (act ing for Eagle Lodge No. 19 of Hillsborough), Bingham Lodge No. 272 A.F. & A.M. rose to the occa sion of their 100th year of pro gress, marked on December 5th ‘67. When the business of this great lodge night was concluded, the lodge was closed, and the banquet room was opened with the beauti ful ladies of the Eastern Star in charge and in attendance. It was a sumptuous spread, a delight to the eye and a fragrant and tasty mem ory. Worshipful Brother B. F. Wil son presided as Master of Cere monies at the request of the Wor shipful Master Wm. M. Lynch. (Continued on Page Two) The Great Smokies Assembly of Cryptic Masonry Set For Waynesville, July 14-16 Masons of all ranks and degrees will assembly at Waynesville for the Annual Summer Assembly sponsored by the Grand Council, Royal and Select Masters in North Carolina on July 14, 15, 16. Heads of the state masonic organizations including Grand Master Bass will be in attendance. Any mason who has had the council degrees and their families are cordially invited to attend. Prominent Masons from the southeastern states will be panel speakers beginning on Monday morning, JuJjLJSth. The program i.s as follows: Sunday July 14th: Registration, Waynesville Junior High School, 2:00 p.m. church service. First Baptist Church, 8:00 p. m. Monday July 15th: Registration, 8:00 a. m. Grand Council opens 8:30 a.m. Panel speakers in the morning, Walter H. Winchester, P.M.I.G.M. and Grand Captain of Hosts, Florida. A. D. Leon Gray, P.G.C. and Superintemdent of Ox ford Orphanage. In the afternoon, Ralph A. Perry, P.G.M. of Masons and Grand Treasurer, Grand Lodge of Georgia. Ben F. Mandle- baum, P.M.I.G.M. of Oklahoma. Tuesday, July 10: Morning Pan el Speakers will be William Kil patrick Lambie, M.I.G.M. of Ten nessee. Daniel T. Lambright, M.I. G.M. of South Carolina. In the af ternoon, a motorcade for the annual pilgrimage to the Masonic Marker at Black Camp Gap in the heart of the Smokies by way of Maggie Valley will b® made. The annual dinner will be held at 7:00 p.m. with C. Wallace Jackson, Department Commander of the Southeastern Department, Grand Encampment, K.T. of U.S.A. as Master of Ceremonies and the speaker will be Rev. H. Dwight McAlister, P. G.M. of Masons _of South Carolina. After each panel speaker com pletes his address, there will be discussion from the floor and after each half day session, a summary will be presented by Joseph C. Bry an, III, P.M.I.G.M. of Maryland. Russell B. Tandy, P.G.H.P. and P. G.C. of Tennessee will be modera tor. C. Ellwood Smyrk of Baltimore, Maryland, General Grand Master of General Grand Council, Royal and Select Masters, International will also speak during sessions. Feeding The Five Hundred On Saturday night of the eighth in the Plantation Inn Banquet Rooms Raleigh Lodge No. 500 held its annual dinner honoring our present Grand Master of Masons in North Carolina, Brother Rob ert N. Bass. Brother Hiram Casebolt, Master of Ceremonies also paid special at tention to two distinguished guests and their fair ladies: Brother J. W. Kellogg of Morehead City, Past Master and Past Secretary of Raleigh Lodge No. 500 and Brother Harrison Kauffman P.M. of this same lodge, and ritualist of renown in all of the Masonic bodies, to in clude The Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. High in priority Brother Milton C. Dixon presented the Past Mas ter’s jewel to Brother Holly Britt, who served the lodge so efficiently and effectively during the year. •Many prominent Masonic guests were present, including Brother Robert H. Williams, Master, Brother Charlie Harris, P.G.M. and Grand Secretary, Brother Pete Dudley, Assistant Grand Secro tary, and this editor, all fittingly complemented by their pretty wives. Carl Goersch, famous Tar Heel writer and after-dinner speaker brightened the occasion with a highly entertaining dissertation on the theme “Friendly People Always Meet Friendly People.” He took us to many places, but brought us home safely and hap pily filled. “Raleigh 500” is heading' into a successful year of continuing Ma sonic progress which we hope to share with them. North Carolina Institutes New Commandery The beautiful new Masonic Tem ple at North Wilkesboro, North Carolina was the scene of the most impressive ceremony of institution of Wilkes Commandery No. 40, Knights Templar. This was the first commandery chartered since May 1944 under the jurisdiction of the Grand Commandery of North Carolina. On Saturday, June Ist, at 3:30 p.m., a host of Sir Knights from all sections of the state gath ered to witness the ceremony and to pay tribute to the ninety-seven charter members and their com mander, Sir Knight Maurice E. Walsh, who is also Grand Treasur er of the Grand York Rite Masonic Bodies. Wilkes Commandery U.D. was opened in full form and the offi cers of the Grand Commandery un der the leadership of R.'.E.'.W. Bryan Phelps, Grand Commander, were i-eceived, and the Grand Com mandery was opened. Thirty-two Past Commanders were recognized. (Continued on Page Two) Grand York Rite Festival In North Carolina On the 11th day of the merry month of May the Grand York Rite Bodies of North Carolina held their annual festival at the Raleigh Masonic Temple on Cas well Street, with a class of 154 candidates and 323 registrants. The day dawned brightly as the ceremonies opened at 8:30 on the Mark Master degree with the alert degree team from the Asheville Chapter No. 25 R.A.M. conferring the work, with high skill and ef ficiency, lead by R.W.M. Patrick B. Nugent. At 9:30 the degree team from Greenville Chapter No. 60 R.A.M. ably led by R.W.M. W. Hoke Smith conferring the degree of Past Master. At 10:00 A.M. The Degree of Most Excellent Master was “put on” by the Raleigh Chapter No. 10 R.A.M.—including both the first and second sections, lead by the (Continued on Page Two)
