Cary Lodge Cornerstone Laid by Grand Master Cary—The new temple of Cary Lodge 198 is being constructed on a hilly and wooded site of striking beauty, and its completion will see still another handsome lodge building added to North Carolina's rapidly growing array. Dudley served as Grand Marshal. Other Grand Lodge officials present included Grand Steward Jack Honeycutt, Grand Tyler Marvin Wilson, Grand Lecturer Gil English, and District Deputy Grand Masters William Langley (24), Norman Miller (25), Eddie Stiles (26) and William Durham (32). Masonic history usually satisfies itself with referring to him simply as the Duke of Beaufort. On January 14, 1771 the Duke of Beaufort issued a commission to Joseph Montfort, Master of Royal White Hart Lodge (now No. 2), in Halifax, which commission read as follows: KNOW YE that we, of the Great Trust and Confidence reposed in our Right Worshipful and well beloved Brother, Joseph Montfort, Esquire, of Halifax, in the Province of North Carolina, in America Do hereby Constitute and Appoint him the said Joseph Montfort, Provincial Grand Master of and for America, with full power and Authority in due form to make Masons and Constitute and Regulate Lodges, as occasion may require . . . (Anyone wishing to read the commission in its entirety will find it reproduced on Page V in the front of THE CODE.) (Continued on Page Two) In the picture at left above Grand Master Leslie 1-1. Garner last month. The Deep Run dedication was on March 18 and the Havelock dedication was March 19. Each of the new buildings is one-story and each is a spacious and well-appointed temple that adds to the image of Freemasonry in its community. Members of the general public attended each dedication and, with the Masons, filled the available seats. The Grand Master presided over both ceremonies, assisted in each instance by Grand Secretary Robert P. Dudley. Those attending at Deep Run included Grand Tyler Marvin D. Wilson, Horace Small (DDGM- 11) and Ray Newell (DDGM-7). At Havelock the audience included Past Grand Masters Robert L. Pugh, Alfred A. Kafer and S. Frank Noble, Grand Tyler Wilson and Harry Rivers (DDGM-8). The Master of the lodge filled his role at each dedication, Jimmie Williams at Deep Run and. Jack O'Rouke at Havelock. Fred Harper served as Principal Architect at Deep Run and Past Master Tom Cathey filled that role at Havelock. (Continued on Page Two) 1 1 1 1 1 ( i i ■ * 1 1 1 1 ( 1 1 1 1 1 ( j 1 1
