Stansil Aldridge appearing in our May issue we failedto include the York Rite when listing his Masonic memberships. The Grand Master has been a member of the Charlotte York Rite Bodies for quite some time. In fact, those bodies will honor him at a one-day Festival on June 28, the candidates on that date will form "The Grand Master’s Class." We apologize to the Grand Master and to the York Rite for the omission. St. John's Day Oxford—Some 1500-2000 Masons and guests assembled on the campus of Oxford Orphanage June 22 to observe St. John's Day. The annual observance of St. John's Day here was a major Masonic event in years gone by, drawing so many visitors that the overflow often swamp ed downtown Oxford. In 1979 it was decided an attempt would be made to restore the event to it's former greatness, so this is the second year of the modern effort. Visitors began arriv ing on campus early in the morning, and most were already on hand for the presentation of the colors at 10 a.m. Following an instru mental rendition of the national anthem, Rev. Brenda Kneece, Or phanage Chaplain, conducted an outdoor worship service. The Orphanage choir then sang a number of selections. Robert L. Winston, Superintendent, ex tended an official welcome to all present, and Grand Master E. Stansil Aldridge responded. This was followed by music by the John Nichols School Band. Visitors then filed through the dining room and picked up plates of fried chicken, which they carried to tables set up under the campus oaks. During the meal music was provided by Sudan Shrine Temple Band and by Sudan Shrine Temple Steel Drum Band. Past Grand Master J. Earl Watson, President of the Orphanage Board of Directors, introduced U. S. Senator Jesse Helms, speaker for the occasion. Senator Helms paid tribute to the Orphanage and to the Masons that have so faithfully supported it over the years. He called for the return of God to government and to the public schools, and he several times likened the principles of Masonry to the principles of good (Continued on Page Two)
