Ervin, Jr., The Man and The Mason” Gov. Martin, Senator Helms, Chief Justice Branch, Attorney General Thornburg among Dignitaries on program. On Tuesday, April 15, 1986 at the Memorial Auditorium in Raleigh, the Grand Lodge of North Carolin will publicly present the first copy of the book, “Sam J. Ervin, Jr., The Man and the Mason,” to Senator Ervin’s family. This will mark the release of the publication, the proceeds from which will go to support The North Carolina Masonic Foundation. On March of 1984, several Masons from eastern North Carolina drove to Morganton to visit former U. S. Senator Sam J. Ervin, Jr. During dinner the Senator expressed his desire to do something for The North Carolina Masonic Foundation and the discussion that followed resulted in the planning of the book. Grand Master I. Boyd Hopkins appointed Past Grand Master James W. Brewer to head a committee to plan the printing and distribution of the book. Due to the untiring efforts of Brother Brewer, together with the assistance of the committee, the book has been printed and is now ready for distribution. The first printing consisted of 5,000 copies, of which 500 will be consecutively numbered and labeled. The first 100 will be presented to persons making a $1,000 or more contribution, and the remaining 400 numbered books will be presented to those making a contribution of $500 or more. These numbered books will be personally signed by the Grand Master. Inasmuch as this book was conceived for the primary purpose of promoting the N. C. Masonic Foundation, the following plan has been advanced for the disposition of the remaining books printed: Each Mason contributing $50 or more will receive a copy of the book. The books will be available during Grand Lodge, and at the Grand Lodge office thereafter. The book contains a Preface by Brother Clifton W. Everett, Sr., of Bethel, N. C.; a biographical sketch by Brother Reynold S. Davenport, P.M., together with pictures and the Masonic writings of Senator Ervin.
