CX-NO. 6 Oxford, North Carolina 27565, June, 1986 ONE DOLLAR A YEAR Orphanage Directors Approve $10,000 School Contribution (Reprinted from The Oxford Public Ledger) WALTER FRANKLIN McCALL Grand Master, 1986-87 This is Our New Grand Master Walter Franklin McCall was born February 29,1929 in Mecklenburg County on a small farm near the City of Charlotte, North Carolina, which he has lived within six miles of his entire life. He was the ninth of eleven children, ten sons and one daughter and eighth son of the late William F. and Lille G. McCall. He attended the Mecklenburg County Schools and graduated from Thomasboro High School. He studied and trained three years with Lee Associates in Industrial Management and Engineering and has completed further studies in numerous seminars at various universities in the fields of geology, groundwater, hydrology and waste water treatment and construction. Bud has a contractor’s license, class unlimited, for company operations and is Vice-President of McCall Brothers, Inc., which was founded forty years ago, involved in water well drilling, water systems and allied equipment. Today, the company continues to operate these divisions and has expanded into utility construction (water and sewer) and energy conservation utilizing geothermal and solar energy. He is also a partner in Callbro Investment Company along with his brothers Garmon and George.. In 1981, he served as President of the National Water Well Association, having served as a member of the Board of Directors and prerequisite offices for seven years and is currently Chairman of the Finance and Permanent Building Committee. In 1982, he was elected President of the “Water Well Journal Board,” a national magazine publication and still serves in that capacity. In community life, he is a former member of the Lions Club, Boy Scout Board and American Cancer Society. On February 11, 1949, Bud married Martha Anita Greene. They have two lovely daughters, Norva, the wife of Edward Pickett, who is a stock broker. They live in Charlotte, N. C., and have one daughter Clare; and Faye, the wife of Wayne Hamorsky, who operates his own electrical company. They also live in Charlotte and have two children, a son Jason and daughter Candy. Wayne is a member of Joppa Lodge No. 530 and both he and Faye are members of the Eastern Star. The McCalls attend Thomasboro Presbyterian Church where he has served as a Deacon, Chairman of the Board for three terms, chaired the Fund Raising Committee, the Building Committee—when the present sanctuary and administration building was built, is an elder and has been a Sunday School Teacher for thirty- eight years. Martha has also served as a Sunday School Teacher and is presently serving as President of the Women of the Church. He was raised a Master Mason in Joppa Lodge No. 530 in Charlotte, N. C., in April 1962. In 1963, he was appointed an officer of this lodge and served as Master in 1970. Also, during the 1970’s, Bud served Masonry in the following capacities: District Education Chairman and (Continued on Page 2) Members of the board of directors of Oxford Orphanage have voted to donate $10,000 to the Granville County school system in support of the newly developed Endowment Program. W. David Ford, business manager and treasurer of the Orphanage, announced the decision shortly after the board meeting. The $10,000 donation is the largest one to date and will put the Endowment Fund closer to its goal of $50,000. Money raised for the Endowment Fund will be used to fund the Progress for Children Award program, a teacher-incentive program designed to recognize employee excellence. Commenting on the decision of the board, Ford said, “This grant is being made to show our support to the Granville County school system. We are the largest ‘parent’ in the school system and want to show our support for the efforts being made. Ford went on to say, “We are very happy with the school system and the way our young people have been accepted and treated. This grant is to say thanks to the system for a job well done.” Ford closed his comments by saying, “We too are Large Number of Delegates Attend 199th Annual Communication RALEIGH—The 199th Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of North Carolina was called to order at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, April 15. 1986, by Brother Benjamin D. Edwards, Master of Mt. Hermon Lodge No. 118, in Memorial Auditorium, Raleigh. After presentation of the Colors, the Grand Lodge Officers were conducted to their stations and places by the Grand Marshal. M.-.W-.Brother Norburn C. Hyatt, Grand Master, opened the Grand Lodge in AMPLE FORM, received the distinguished guests and the Past Grand Masters. Grand Master Hyatt presented W.-.Brother Glenn W. Brown, Grand Orator of the Grand Lodge, who delivered the oration. (The oration is printed elsewhere in this issue.) The remainder of the Tuesday morning session was taken up with the reports of the Grand Treasurer, the Grand Secretary and various Boards and Commissions. Before opening the Grand Lodge for the afternoon session a ceremony to present the first copy of the book, “Sam J. Ervin, Jr., The Man and the Mason," was held. Grand Master Hyatt welcomed those present and introduced Brother James G. Martin, 33°, Governor of the state of North Carolina, who presented th first copy of the book to Brother Sam Ervin, III, who responded on behalf of the family. Brother Lacey Thornburg, Attorney General of the State of North Carolina, made a few A FAMILY AFFAIR—On May 16th and 17th, Derita Lodge No. 715, Charlotte, raised 10 members of the same family—eight Heffner brothers and their two brothers-in-law, Vic West and Lonnie Snider. Five of them were raised on Friday evening, May 16, and the remaining five were raised early Saturday morning at a degree beginning at 6:00 A.M. with breakfast at the lodge. The PCA plan is a positive step in the right direction.” The only stipulation of the $10,000 gift is that the maximum award for any one employee be no larger than $1,000. The criteria for selection of recipients involves a three-person outside evaluation of the teachers and other professional employees involved. Non-certified teacher assistants, custodians, secretaries, etc., are selected by a panel process. Dr. Tom Houlihan, school superintendent, said, “The gift from Oxford Orphanage is a tangible method of showing support for our efforts this year. We have worked very hard to make the young people at both orphanages feel welcome and a part of our school system. This kind of contribution is recognition that a lot of teachers, counselors and principals have done a good job of working with these students.” Dr. Houlihan further commented, “We are genuinely excited about the level of support received for the Endowment Fund. In fact, our original goals for fund- raising have been easily met. This kind of support means so much for the future of education in our system.” remarks in tribute to Brother Sam Ervin, Jr. R.-.W-.Walter F. McCall, Deputy Grand Master, read a stirring message from Brother Jesse Helms, United Stated Senator, North Carolina, who was unable to be present. Brother C. W. Everett read a message from Brother Joseph Branch, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina. After the Ceremony, a reception was held in the lounge of Memorial Auditorium. Before opening the Grand Lodge for the afternoon session, Grand Master Hyatt introduced John Verdery, State Executive Officer, DeMolay, who introduced Scott S. Knowles, State Master Councilor of DeMolay, who delivered a brief and interesting address. After the Grand Lodge was called from refreshment to labor W.'.Brother Robert M. Bird, Chairman of the Committee on Necrology, conducted a memorial service for the brothers who passed away during the past year. Grand Master Norburn C. Hyatt gave his report followed by reports of several more boards and commissions to complete the first days’ sessions. The Grand Lodge reconvened at 9:00 Wednesday morning to conduct the remainder of the business to come before this session.
