Community Connections, November 1992 Page 7 The Quilt photo by Tom Amerson O.HEKRY’S ddl Approval Expanded The Food and Drug Administration has expanded its approval of the antiviral ddl. Previously ddl had been approved only for use in HIV+ persons unable to tolerate AZT; now ddl has been approved as an initial treatment for anyone. The new approval is based on resluts of a study which found that when ddl was given to patients who had taken AZT for at least 16 weeks, T4 (helper cell) counts increased. Eventually, T4 counts again declined, but not as quickly as with AZT; ddl was also less toxic to blood cells than AZT.--South ern Voice, 9/17/92, Washington Blade, 10/2/92 Washington DC APRIL 25,1993 Nov. 7, Benefit to send Jackie Steele to the 1992 Miss NC-USA Pageant November 13 Miss Gay America Tiffany Bonet In a Benefit for Ursula Warren Nominal Door Charge Downstairs Nov. 21,The Annual Miss Lounge Lizard Pageant featuring the current reigning Cousin It $75 for First Place No Entry Fee Southern Country continued from page 3 Country Asheville member, Jerry Conner. Heaping mounds of barbecued chicken, beef and pork were complemented by all the usual (and not-so-usual) side dishes. Country music wafted in the breeze and cameras were everywhere, recording the spectacular fall day. Every nook and cranny of Scandals was packed for the Saturday evening hoe- down. Thunderous cheers rose as Southern Country Asheville unveiled the special decorations created by Tom and Barry as a surprise for the locals and visitors. A spe cial raffle of fantastic prized was featured, and the dancing continued until nearly 3 a.m. Our visitors discovered the true mean ing of mountain breakfast at the T-Dance and Brunch held at Trax on Sunday. Mounds of food freshly prepared in the kitchens of Southern Country Asheville members pro vided a hearty "hello" as folks shivered in from the cool morning. But the energy to dance was still there. A dance swap, featur ing several brand new dances, got the juices flowing, and the floor was filled until 5 p.m. Of course, there are die-hards in every crowd. Those who could still move then- legs adjourned to the hospitality suite at the Best Western for the "last hurrah." Once again, all of the hosts remarked about the friendliness of the crowd. Truly, the friends of Southern Country are special people. And after two consecutive years of Autumn Fest celebrations, they are friends of our beautiful mountains. If you missed the fun of Autumn Fest this year, start making plans now for Au tumn Fest ’93, to be held the third weekend in October next year. Southern Country Asheville is already making plans for an even more festive occasion. Washington DC APRIL 25,1993 DON’T MISS THIS ONE!
