The government's es- tiinntf of tlio cotton crop, placing the sea son' yill at 18,SS5,000 bales of 500 ponnda 'rss, 'exclusive of llnters, appeared to b Tcrv iicnily In line with expectations la the loi:il niirket, and while trading was ex tremely active, both before and after the puMi"itin of the report there was no very imnc.rtiiiit change In prices. The close was S i.nt a net decline of 711 points, ami iit practically the lowest level of the .ll The market opened steady at a decline of i .ins to an au Vance of 1 point, and while tZ "fiMcs were better than due, worked ..nilu'allv lower during the morning and p rlv afternoon under heavy selling by lo- I yr southern- bears, and, scattering liqui iitioii There was a good demand on a "'..,1,. down in the way of covering by small er short.' andT some trade buying, but be fore the Kovernment report was issued, ac tive months had sold 7 to 10 points under L ,-ioslng figures of last night, with all. .options except July making net low re- rrfs for the season.. Immediately follow , , ti,e government figures, which were pub lished promptly atN2 o'clock, the market ullied 1 or 12 points from the lowest on overinir 1,11(1 l"ylnT b? houses, but the demand was readily supplied on the ad v.ime and the market later turned easier ..'.'lin' with January cotton selling, at 8,53; 'fiivh at S.(G, and May at 8.72, or 9 to H joints under the closing figures of Satur lw jut before the close. The South was siid to be a seller here during the day, and tiie market's chief support again seemed to ruine from the covering of shorts aud the jiiivin from abroad. . The Kovernnienf's estimate. was probably i shade under some of the more radically 'bearish forecasts based on the recent gln imi)r report, but an average of 31 individual estimates made recently by experts or trade intborities placed the commercial crop at OTO.iHiO balesv whereas today's official fig ures were considered as pointing to a .rrowth for the season of not less than. 15, iiKi.iioo hales, with allowances for linters, while there also seemed a disposition here to consider the government likely to, under estimate in large crop years. Wall Street heard more good news today than on any other day for many a week. The stock market, which has been rather heavy of late, re sponded , with generous gains. The day's occurrences touched the market directly at several points and buying was carried on much more confidently. Union Pacific wa raised 3 points above Saturday's close, U. S. Steel and several others 2 or more points, and virtually all . the remaining stocks of prominence from 1 ta. 2 points.. It was assumed that the market at the' outset would reflect the unexpected favor able ba-nk statement for last week, and the targe gain in unfilled orders for Novem ber reported by the United States Steel Corporation. Opening gains, however, were small, and were not long maintained. Before noon the character of the market changed again and during the remainder of the session prices were on a higher plane; The bank statement and the steel figures were suDDlemented as market factors by announcement of an advance in the price of copper, sales of which were quoted at 13c. the highest of the movement. The European demand was reported as especial ly heavy. Of greater importance as market factors was the announcement that United States Steel had raised Its price for wire and nans. The especial strength of Union Pacific may be traced In part to the action of the Com merce Court in Dermanently restraining the Interstate Commerce Commission from mai$ ing effective the proposed reductions in In- ter-mountaln freight rates. All of the northwestern roads which are directly affected made good gains after an nouncement of this decision. The tenor of the report of the Hadley commission in re spect to railroad securities was regarded as favorable from the stock market viewpoint. Another occurrence which helped the bull? was the refusal of the Supreme Court to m terfere with the American Tobacco reorgan izatlon- plau. American Tobacco rose 18 points on the "curb," and the bonds and preferred stocks also advanced briskly. The government's cotton crop estimate confirmed expectations of a yield exceeding all records. The report was one more ol the day's happenings, which helped to bring about a more cheerful sentiment. Car loans were placed at 2V, per cent., but the ruling rate was 4 per cent. An abrupt decline of 2 points in Canadian Pacific, shortly before the close, was explained in the announcement that $18,000,000 of new stock was to be issued on terms which con ferred valuable "rights" upon shareholders The bond market closed firm, after ac early period- of Irregularity with especial weakness in the Wabash issues. Total sales par value. $4,859,000. United States bond? unchanged, on call. Total sales stocks foi the day, 533,000 shares. . . 1 CLOSING STOCK LIST.
