New York, July 15. The cotton mar ket was very quiet today and fluctua tions were irregular within a range of 7 or S points with the close afa net advance of 1 to 3. points. ' Liverpool was lower than due, and the local market opened at a decline of 1 point, but Quickly rallied on the Improved tone or the stock market, a more cheerful view of- internatlbnal politics, a . little Wall Street buying, and a renewal of scattered covering in New Orleans. Thi bulge carried prices a'u :ui 4 Dcintst above last night's close, but the continued good weather in the Sutli. clicked 'fresh buying Tor mg ac-uut and the" market: soon eased eff a decline. There was some - Southern selling on the setback which carried prices some 3 to S points lower, but offerings were limited and a rally in Xew Orleans was followed by renewed steadiness here. Closing prices were within 2 or 3 points of the best. STOCK - MARKET TWO SIDED Action of the First Two Honrs Session Reversed Toward Close-r-Record-Breaklng Quotations. of New York, July 15. For the first four hours of today's session, stocks developed a more definite two-sidea character, in the sense that specialties, chiefly those in the war-contract class, manifested greater strength, whiie railways denoted increased selling pressure. In the final hour this con dition underwent a sharp reversal, all the former ., speculative favorites com ing Rapidly to the front,, with ga.ins of 1-to more than 2 points.' The change was coincident with the announcement -that the - Standard Oil Company had disposed of various of its pipe lines 5to meet the wiaTiea of th Interstate Commerce Commission and- the declaration of an increased dividend by Amalgamated Copper. v - Record' breaking quotations, were made by Bethlehem Steel -at 181 1-2, j American can at 52::l-s;BaldwinLo-comotive at 71 fr-4 and Willys-Overland at 138 1-2. United Steel changed hands in enormous quantities - toward - the close, rising to 63 3-8? its best quota tion since the early part of June, when the Federal Court absolved the cor poration from any infraction of the Sherman law.
