After a decline of 7 to 9 points in the early trading today the cotton market firmed up and went to a net advance of 4 to 5 points. The close was one to five points over yesterdays. Early in the session, much of the business was to even up outstanding contracts, but later the market readily responded to fresh buy ing. Poor cables and a somewhat better weather map caused the depression, around the opening, but no real sell ing pressure developed. Detailed weather reports at the middle of the morning indicated heavy rains over Ok lahoma which bulls considered disas trous to that state's crop. A stimulating influence was- reports from Alabama that farmers were get ting as high as $50 a ton for cotton seed. Cotton closed steady 1 to 5 points up. ' New York, Oct. 16. Trading in stocks today was moderate and altogether professional, with a further diminu tion of public Interest. Prices at the outset, were so Irregular as to suggest further- liquidation, but declines were largely effaced In the later dealings, when another rise in such specialties as Baldwin Locomotive, General Motors and Willys-Overland caused the short interest to cover. Bethlehem Steel ascended seven points to the new high price of 4.84. There was further selling for Euro pean account, mainly of the railroads, but this made only slight impression upon quoted values. United States Steel also, was offered ..for account of foreign interests,, selling off a sub stantial fraction toi82 1-8, but recov ering at the end.- Consolidated Gas lost over three points of its recent rise on denial of any contemplated "extra" dividend payments. Gossip busied itself with conjecture concerning the tenor of Washington's note to Great Britain, but in no quarter was there any fear of serious compli cations. Trade reports were of the same hope ful' nature -.one leading authority de claring that "the tide of business is rising at an accelerated paca," This truly applies to the Steel indus try, in which activity continues on an undiminished scale. Initial payments. in connection with the Anglo-French 'note- was reflected in the bank statement, actual loans showing an expansion of almost $150, 000,000 deposits increasing almost $178, 000,000 with a cash gain of almost $28,000,000 the whole making for a de crease reserves of a little more than a million dollars. The bond market also showed a de cided falling off in demand. Total sales par Value $1,725,000. - United States bonds unchanged on call during the week. THE WEATHER.
