l ssss sniSZSM , . " FINANCIAL AND . COMMERCIAL BETTEB TONE IN COTTON Burlng More Active, Especially Near the Cloe, Whieh Was at an Ad vance of ST to lO Points, New York, July 22. A much better tone developed in the cotton market today and buying was more active, es pecially near the close-, which was sieady at an advance ofT 5 to 10 points. The opening was very quiet, but steady and unchanged to one. point advance, practically ignoring the Liverpool mar ket which, due to some "2 1-2 to 3 points higher, closed barely steady' and; 1 to 1 1-2 points lower on account of a little hedge4 seating. October here later sold off to ,12.32, December 13.07 and January 13.13,: a decline of 2 or 3 points under last Tilght. - private advances from Atlanta said that reports from reliable parties in Georgia, Alabama and the Carolinas indicated very great damage, the fields being grassy and the plant very sappy, and that hot weather now would be disastrous. ; ; After the first hour the market hard ened perceptibly, gaining strength as the covering orders were supplement ed by New Orleans buying and reports of better spots ' until near -the close, the list was fully 10 to 12 points over the lowest of the' morning, October selling at "13.03, .December 13.19 and January 13.24. A notable feature was the covering by some of the Wall Street houses, suggesting the idea that even this interest was becoming im pressed with the idea of unfavorable crop news from the eastern belt. C, SUNDAY, v STOCKS ACTIVE' AND STRONG Specialties In Further Demand by Bears - -Motors Particularly- Prominent " Ralls Sluggish. New. York, July 22. For a midjsum mer week-end session today's market waB unusually active, broad and strong. Special stocks afforded the basisjiof a large proportion of the total turn over, being in further demand-, by the bears on short interest. Motor1 issues were particularly prominent,, with gains of 2 to 3 points in Wiiiys-Over-land, and Maxwell and ten for General Motors. Munitions and allied i, shares were substantially better, together with tobaccos. United States Steel, was the real leader, : trading in thai, stock representing about . twenty! percent, of the whole, at an extremely advance of 1 1-8, most of which was 'retained. There was a better tone to shares of the independent steel companies, nota bly Lackawanna and Republic, togeth er with Colorado Fuel and American C2L1V Railfuwere again relegated to a place of; minor importance, even the invest ment issues, moving sluggishly. Read ing closed with a fractional gain, but Wisconsin Central forfeited four points df its recent advance.' The bank state ment reflected a substantial cash gain, the actual increase of about $13,500,00 be,ing In excess of all estimates, while loans showed further contraction, with an increase of almost $13,000,000 in re serves, bringing the total excess up to $108,000,000, against $53,546,000 two weeks ago. 1 Bonds were steady. . COTTON GOODS MARKET Prices Firm With Trade Only Mod CTately Aetlve In Many Lines. New- York, July . 22. Cotton goods prices are ruling firm with trade only moderately active in many staple lines at first hands. The sold up condi tions of mills continues as the strong feature of the situation. The bleacher ies and finishing works are notable to make deliveries promptly and new business for late delivery is not being sought In many cases , until further progress has been made in filling or ders in hand. The New York ", mar kets have been filled with buyers of wash fabrics, white goods, and some domestic jobbing lines, and the export demand continues steady. Owing; to' the very high prices for. the .coming spring season- late business la being placed .in- 3 ; very conservative way.
