Wide gains were scored by cotton today, heavy buying making its appearance espe cially in July, in which more general chort covering was induced by the strength of spots. At the highest lev-, els prices were 47 to 102 points above the level of yesterday's closing, July showing the greatest improvement. The close was 41 to 87 points up, net. Around the opening call prices were 1 to 2 points off under selling based on the extremely favorable weather over the belt and the forecast of fair weatherfor Sunday. Before the trad- rf was very old, an urgent demand was met and after that all bearish in fluences were ignored. The ring was unable to supply the demand, espe cially for July contracts.. Highest prices were reached toward the close. In many respects the situation resem bled taht brought about when May contracts were being liquidated. Much of the buying resulted from rlaims that high grades sold In the Pot department after hours yesterday t prices as hiarh as half a cent a pound over board quotations. Official ly, however, spot prices were changed t 31 cents for middling. The advance en contracts carried July to 28.20, thus greatly reducing the discount under spots on that month.
