Simmons Kills Stamp Tax on Checks and Bond Tax. : Bank Cheek Will Wear No Stamps in Revenue Bill and Mnnicipal Bonda Are Free Fayetteville Keen Her Camp - By S. R. WINTERS. Washington, Nov. 26. The Fayette ville chamber of commerce has invited Senator Simmons to be guest of the city on December third at a dinner to celebrate "The Acquisition and the Retention of . Camp Bragg." . The senior senator will be unable to .accept the invitation owing to his in tensive duties in connection with the senate revenue bill. Coincident with the invitation is the assurance that Frank Hampton, secretary to Senator Simmons, received from the war de partment that Camp Bragg would be made a permanent institution at Fay etteville. However, the camp will be only two-brigade whereas the original plans were to construct a six-brigade cantonment. About 12.000 men will be stationed at Fayetteville. This information was furnished Mr. Hampton by the committee appointed by Secretary Baker to determine the future of military camps. The senate finance committee has struck from the revenue bill the pro vision that would levy a tax of two cents on all bank checks. Bankers throughout North Carolina had regis tered stern opposition to such a levy and Senator Simmons got busy and had the provisions eliminated from the revenue measure. He had been opposed to the levy all along but other members of the com mittee insisted on it being incorporat ed into law. Likewise, has the provis ion that would levy a tax on municipal and state bonds been struck from the revenue bill. PERMANENT NAVAL AIR BASE AT CAMP GLENN IVavy Department Wants to Know About Buying State Property or Leasing: It Long Term. By S. It- WINTERS. Washington, Nov. 26. Secretary of the navy Josephus Daniels in a letter today to Governor T. W. Bickett makes known the intention of the navy de partment to establish as permanent the naval air station recently olcated at Camp Glenn, near Morehead City. The property will either be acquired or leased for a considerable term of years. "As it is the policy of the depart ment to establish permanent stations only upon property which it owns or holds under a long term lease," writes Secretary Daniels to Governor Bick ett, "it seems proper at this time to refer to your letter of August 31, 1918, in which you tendered the 'full and free use of Camp Glenn' to the navy depart ment. In view of the above it is re quested that the department be ad vised whether there are any objections to proceeding with negotiations, through the proper channels, leading to the purchase or lease of the above named property." NORTH CAROLINIANS IN HUN PRISON CAMPS ARE NAMED Washington, Nov. 26. A list of prisoners of war in German prison camps issued today by the war depart ment included: At Camp Karlshrue, Lieutenant Hargrove Bellamy, 509 Market street, Wilmington, North Carolina. Trouble Due to "Misinfor mation." New York, Nov. 26. Difficulties be tween Peru and Chile, which resulted yesterday in recall of consular repre sentatives by each nation from the principal cities of its neighbor, have been overcome by an apology on the part of the Peruvian government, Car los Castro Ruitz, consul general of Chile, announced here tonight. A cablegram informing him of the Peruvian apology was received tonight by Mr. Ruiz, according to his state ment, from the Chilean foreign minis ter. The message, the consul asserted, au thorized him to announce that the Pe ruvian officials admitted that in mak ing public reports of outbreaks against their citizens in Iquique and Antofa gasta, Chile, th'ey had acted on misin formation. This was furnished, he said, by the Peruvian consul at Iquique, whose authority had been canceled for this reason by the Chilean government. The apology sent from Lima, Mr. Ruiz added, was wholly satisfactory to the Chilean officials and "brought the misunderstanding to an end." The consul general stated that a se ries of messages received from Santi ago today denied reports of anti-Peruvian demonstrations in Chile. The ca blegrams further announced, he said, that the dismissal of the Peruvian en voy at Iquique had "provoked in Peru a certain agitation that determined my government to authorize its consults in Chile to return home if the circum stances justified." Despite a border dispute between the two countries, Mr. Ruiz declared that Chile had "the utmost sympathy" for Peru and had taken steps to watch the frontier so as to prevent Peruvian revolutionists from receiving arms or ammunition from compatriots residing in Chile. WHOLESALE ROBBERIES IN LUMBERTON HOMES Houses Entered and Wearing Apparel and Money Taken and Places Ransacked. By F. GROVER BRITT Lumberton, Nov. 27. There was a wholesale house robbery in Lumber ton Saturday night. The homes of N. P. Andrews, W. H. Kinlaw, C. M. Pre vatt and Joe Blacker were entered. The robbers took practically all Mr. Andrews wearing apparel and a $40 gun. Two watches were taken from the home of Mr. Prevatt and a pistol was stolen . from Mr. Blacker. Mr. Kinlaw and family are away from home and it is not known what was taken there. Entrance was made through windows while members of the families of the homes robbed were away from home. Bureau drawers and trunks were ran sacked in all the homes entered and it is supposed the robbers were look ing for money and jewelry. No ar rests have been made. Around 20 merchants, some from Robeson and others from Hoke and Scotland counties, were given a hear ing before H. A. Page, State food ad ministrator, on the charge of violating the food regulations here Monday. Mr. Page withheld his judgement in the cases. All Lumberton stores will be closed Thursday and services will be held at all local churches. The LaFayette Mutual Life Insur ance Co. of LumbertoU has purchased from K. M. Barnes, A. P. Caldwell and Robt. E. Lee, the building corner, Fourth and Chestnut streets, known as the Planters Bank & Trust Co. building. The consideration was $20, 000. The insurance company has its general office on the second floor of the building and will maintain the same quarters. The Planters Bank & Trust Co. occupies the first floor of the building. The Robeson county Red Cross chapter will meet in Lumberton Fri day, November 29 at which time offi cers will be elected for the coming year. The meeting will open at 11 a. m. All Red Cross members in the county are urged to attend. SPRING HOPE HAS BIG TOBACCO HOUSE FIRE Planters' Warehouse Destroyed To gether With Other Building-. Loss Is 950,000. (Special Star Telegram.) t Rocky Mount, Nov. 25. Fire that originated in the Planters warehouse caused damage at Spring Hope this afternoon estimated at $50,000, the loss being partially covered by insurance. The flames raged for over an hour and were finally placed under control by the heroic work of a citizens' bucket brigade. Motor apparatus from Rocky Mount, called on to aid in com bating the fire, reached the scene after it had been controlled. The explosion of an oil stove in the basement of the tobacco sales ware house, where some colored tobacco gra4ers were busy, is believed to have started the blaze. In the warehouse was a large quantity of tobacco, in cluding a large amount in the base ment. The warehouse building was destroyed, including the tobacco, the sales stables of W. H. Griffin and L B. Gardner, the machine shops of F. H. Collie and S. W. Brantley, and a dwelling house were also burned to the ground. The lire this afternoon was the larg est Jn Spring Hope in many years, and for a time it seemed as if the whole southeastern portion of the town 'was doomed. The bucket brigade worked heroically and checked the progress of the flames as they were threatening two other store buildings. . Eliminate Extra Pullman Fare. Washington, Nov. 23.
