' By New York. Dec, 19. Trading in se curities during the greater part of to day's sejssiorwwas dull to the. point of stagnation, the Stock- market itself being most often . overshadowed by further persistent" liquidation of- lib erty bonds. - ;, ,'' This condition ( experienced a sudden transformatiorf in the final hour when heavy sellrrig of high-grade shares, notably rails, swept over the stock market effecting extreme reversals oti two --to four points. The oupourfhg of transport Issues was . unaccompanied tion, other than k by any explana statement issued by Director-General McAdoo which again emphasized the possibility of ex tending federal control over the rail roads to five years. Transactions in liberty bonds abs tained enormous proportions, the fourth 4's contributing more than their usual quota at the new " low record of 94.72. This represents a depreciation of about 3 1-4 per cep.t from their initial quotation on the stock exchange, - Various theories were advanced in explanation of the break In the gov ernment's latest war flotation, these bearing vnaalnly on the cash require ments of corporations and institu tions early in the coming year. This theory lacks plausibility, how ever, as call loans were plentiful at 4 to 4 per cent and long time funds were freely offered at 5 rper cent, a slight reduction from the ruling rate of the past month. Among leading stocks, U. S. Steel made a better -showing than other in dustrials ' a"nd equipments, forfeiting only -a large fraction. " Traction bonds issues were heavy with liberty bonds, but the interna tional group held steady. Total sales, par value, aggregated $20,500,000. Old U. S. bonds unchanged, on call.
