MANY THRILLING TRIPS IN AVIATION'S HISTORY Plight of Three Balloonists in Canada Not First of J Perilous Experiences ; NEW YORK, Jan. ' .---Aviation's thrilling history, filled with adventur ous journeys in ballon anaalria'ne, al ready contains a story' "paralleling tlx one created by the fliKht Into the froz en lastneeses pf northern panada which has focussed the hewaJxungry readers of the world on the three American lieutenants who recently completed it. In 1910 two New York airmen, Alan r. Hawley and Augustus Post,' were lost among the untrodden. wilderness .of Canada for seven days after traveling: nearly 1,200 miles through; the air from St. Louis in the balloon America Hi The floated northeastward for two riav and two nicrhts. cross intr over the great lakes and beyond the outposts which are few and far between in the iiorthiancu jjespairing or nnaing a guitable landing place, they brought their gas bag down into dense trees, ending a trip that won the Gordon Ben nett trophy and set a new. record for distance, and begfnnlngr'a tramp over unknown land that dwarfed in public interest their thrilling experiences in the air. v Extricating themselves from the limbs of trees entangled in their basket, Post and . Hawley tramped - along a stream and later around" the hem of- a lake. as the woods were impenetrable a' and trackless. For four ;days and .four nights they pushed southward, through j snowstorms, rain and .Stabbing cold winds, and with little to eat" Hawley wrenched his knee and the pair stopped to rest at the first restful place they found an old cave. There they prayed, exchanged confi dences to be carried back by whichever one lived if either failed to get, back home, and then took a fresh start. - The nett day they came upon a" shovel the first sign of civilization they had tncountered, and a few yards' further a tent They sp'entt he night In this tent and the next morning, going down to the sld( nt a lair a thev nierced the air with yells of greetingTFtcrrft..' across the water came a reply, .and two trap pers in a canoe The trappers; took, the; airmen down a river in canoes for two days until they reached Chioutime,-' a settlement, from where they communi cated with the world they, had left and began their trip back to. New York. They had left SU Louis October 17 and the flrBt word came from them Octo ber 28. - -. .,- -A balloon trip that ended above the N'orth sea was made by Captain von Schaeck during the 1909 Gordon Ben nett race, which started from Berlin. A passing steamer spied the guide rope splashing through the water, and towed the balloonback to the coast of Norway with the rope. secured;to tha stern of the ship and the balloon floating over-j head. ':f '' . ' ' Being lost to the world was not a new experience to Lieut. .Walter Hin tbnFone of the three lieutenants who recently piloted the A-5598 from' Rock away air station into Canada. He was a pilot on the NCy. th,e famous naval seaplane which rdade the first trans Atlantic air voyage, and was inthe cockpit of that plane when-It was lost out in the gulf of Mexico In December, 1919. '. :' - 0n that occasion the NC-4 left Gal veston, Texas, early In the morning on an intended non-stop flight to Mobile.' Ala. Throughout the day and the night and part of the following day the fa mous seaplane was' unheard from. The government was making . arrangements - to send an armada of seaplanes and hoats into the gulf to look for the miss- ing craft, when a radio message from it was picked up in New Orleans. The NC-4 reported it-had been forced . to come down by low-habglng : clouds oft the southeastern coast of Louisiana. When on the water the wireless on the plane was not powerful enough to carry mny miles and communication was im possible until the craft took the air again the following afternoon..
